I'll be in Cappadocia in December, mostly travelling around - I get to see Goreme at last! Anyone got any advice, observations and useful bits of info, I've never been to Turkey before.

as a fan of turkish music and things turkish, I've got to say I've never travelled East of Istanbul. There will I'm sure be some good sounds to hear there, enjoy your travels Janet.

Hi, Janet. I have actually been to that neck of the ud but only as part of an organised group (probably the first and last time I don't travel independently) so I have no idea how easy it is to get around Cappadocia with limited Turkish. I imagine German would be the most useful foreign language. We flew to Kayseri from Istanbul before proceeding to Urgup, our base in Cappadocia. I suppose the fashionable way to view the land of fairy chimneys is from a balloon but I like the feel of terra firma. Our focus was mostly on the rock churches and the Greek presence but I was also impressed by the Ihlara gorge. You can watch alpine swifts seemingly fly suicidally into a rock face before closing their wings at the last minute and disappearing into narrow crevices. Enjoy yourself in Göreme and let us know how you got on.
