Kofi Ghanaba, pka Guy Warren, also known as Odomankoma Kyrema (the Divine Drummer) has his birthday today. Born 4 May 1923 in Accra, Ghana. I couldn't find any YouTube videos despite the fact that he has played with Lester Young, Thelonius Monk, among others. I really wanted to find one because I had become fascinated with him not only for his drumming but also things like - according to the bio in the link below "becoming the first African to present a programme on the BBC World Service.":

On a whim, I checked out MySpace. He has a MySpace as Kofi Ghanaba, with no friends, well Tom's there. That's one. It must be the same man, 85 years old. I requested to be his friend, sent him a happy birthday message stating who I thought he was and sort of explaining who I was. I hope I didn't sound like a stalker. This is his MySpace page:

Hi Judith - can you fix the MySpace link in the Kofi Ghanaba post (you've doubled the bio link). I couldn't find his page with a MySpace search, but I did find this quote about Tony Allen :
If Art Blakey was his god, Jesus was undoubtedly drum pioneer Kofi Ghanaba (aka Guy Warren of Ghana) who had taken Afro-ryddims live and direct to jazz

Here's the link, Chris:
Like Judith says, the page is a bit bare.

His zodiac sign is down as Pisces, which looks like a discrepancy with the date Judith has.

Thanks Chris & Norman. Yes, the birthdate doesn't fit. Here's another bio I found which tells a little more about his music. I also listened to some sound clips on Sterns, artist - Guy Warrren (Kofi Ghanaba):

I've received a message from Kofi Ghanaba. His birthdate is May 4, 1923 and he was born in Accra. He is planning to upload a video but he lives far from the city and internet access and it takes time.
