Son of Dave and Princess Julianna

On the session with Son of Dave, recorded this week for broadcast on Monday (28 April), he is accompanied by two singers Cathy Coffey and Julie Higgins.

When I asked Julie if she had made any records featuring herself as lead, I'm sure she said 'no', but under cross-examination she admitted that she did sometimes perform as Princess Julianna.

Investigating Son of Dave's Myspace profile at www.myspace.com/thesonofdave I found Julie listed under three identities, PJ Higgins, The Black Stripe (very unlikely, that one) and Princess Julianna, where she is a reggae singer and exceptional to my ears: http://www.myspace.com/hrhprincessjulianna

Neil Foxlee, if you are reading this, please check it out and report back with your verdict.

Princess Juliana features on Natacha Atlas' "Eye of the Duck", a floor filling favourite of mine.

I assume it's the same Pricess Juliana, I mean how many reggae singers of that name can there be?

Cheers

Jamie

PS Charlie: when I clicked on the MySpace link on your post it took me to the page of a someone in the US, apparently Jesus is her homeboy. I don't think it's Princess Juliana!

It's freaky baby, I knew I'd heard that name somewhere before. She's on Natacha's 'Mish Maoul' album as well, the track Feen, which in a perfect world would have been daytime Radio One material.

mysterious, Jamie

I have now changed the link in my original post, making nonsense of your correction.

But leave it there, for posterity to ponder

I guffawed just reading about PJ's MBNA, which rides the version to Tapper Zukie's MPLA (Channel One), an eccentric tribute to one of the parties to the 1970s civil war in Angola which reworks Roy Richards' Freedom Blues (Studio One), itself a cover of Little Richard's late 60s/early 70s minor hit of the same name (sorry, can't resist these genealogies). This too could be a minor hit with the right exposure, if the term 'hit' means anything these days.

PJ is clearly talented, extremely versatile and (ahem) prepossessing. The lyrics to MBNA are genuinely witty, but I find PJ's voice a bit little-girly for my taste (Before the Morning provides the best evidence of her range). I'd better not comment on the pictures of the Princess, but if I were still doing a radio show, I'd have been happy to have her in the studio, so to speak.

PS for a female reggae-background singer with a wider range, Charlie, look out for Etana's The Strong One (VP), due out mid-June: she's the one who did that Roots track I told you about

Of the other tracks available on MySpace, I especially recommend Wrong Address.

I don't why, but my attention has been drawn to Cathy Coffey - did she not sing with the Stereo MCs? I have a memory of her being involved with them...I could be wrong.

Nikki, when were you ever wrong?

Cathy was indeed with Stereo MCs in the beginning, and is still with them to this day.
