Well, Alonso had three speculative shots, and therein lies the problem with Spain because they are so perfect that they wouldn't dream of trying to get behind defences with long hopeful punts, or lobbing the ball into the box. So when they come up against decent, well-organised defences the only alternative is to either shoot on sight or exploit on the break. Well, as you say they nullified the German midfield to such an extent that, somewhat ironically, they only really got a chance to take advantage of spaces left by the opposition once they'd scored a set-piece goal. That halted the German's equally studied (if less technically accomplished) approach, which opened the game up allowing the likes of Pedro to attempt to walk the ball into the net.

If the two teams play to their full ability on Sunday they could well cancel each other out. It's no surprise that Villa didn't have any chance to add to his goal tally last night because Spain reverted to a 5-man midfield in order to match Germany man for man. Holland also play with a 5-man midfield, and don't even care that their nominal striker isn't scoring goals - 'efficiency' becomes 'pragmatism' when it dons an orange shirt. Hopefully there'll be an early goal, and then the sparks will fly. If not, expect more frustration from the commentators, who after all are there to enliven matters as well as describe what's going on.

Sorry, my mistake. This is not the this is not the world cup thread. Con, any chance of you putting your above post in rhyming couplets to help me try to understand it?

Iambic pentameter?

The game by Spain, staid, mainly very plain
Victory comes from Puyol’s flying mane
Skip next, to the troubled Dutch, Robben prancing
Bores versus Boers, nil-nil, no-one’s dancing

(Holland to win on penalties)

Brilliant! Con, you should have done that throughout the entire Cup and it would have saved me reading Richard Williams waffle in the Guardian!

Great, Con. That's the stuff, thank you.

Miaow.

A win on penalties? Is that you or the octopus?

El pulpo Pablo dijó 'España es!'
Y tuvó razón - aunque es aleman -
Los holandeses temen su extraño poder
Pero mucho más la cabeza del catalan...

Oh well, it'll have to do....

It's all over now. The Dutch coach, Bert van Marwijk, is quoted as saying after the final, "I would have loved to have won that match, even with not so beautiful football." If you set out with the aim of winning ugly you deserve to end up losing ugly. Fortunately, the losing finalists are soon consigned to oblivion. The better team on the night and the best team in the tournament won. Normal life may resume...

Not a great final. The 2nd half was pretty exciting - the excellent Spanish goalkeeper saved his team's ass twice and the Spanish inability to score in a largely undefended goal meant they missed, as usual, several opportunities. The Spanish deserved to win but it's sad that 2 poor refereeing decisions in the final minutes allowed this to happen - giving a goal kick to Spain when it should have been a corner to Holland and then denying Holland a penalty for Spain's double blocking. Dutch bitterness and accusations will linger and the Spanish will know that they got lucky: on penalties they would have choked. Still, a fine goal.

I was at a Gypsy Arts Festival on Saturday night so missed Germany-Uruguay which I see described as the finest game of the entire tournament. Anyone else agree?

I liked this US reporter's description of the final as "immiseratingly dull " - a new word to me, though I thought some previous finals have been a lot duller.
