"definitely a second cousin" - John Sebastian.

Sebastian claimed that his song was amongst the first he ever wrote and that Tim Hardin at first admitted "ripping off" the tune, but later would claim that he wrote his song first before Sebastian did his... Both songs appear to have been recorded before the other was released on record.

Peggy Lee actually recorded both songs on two consecutive 1968 (non LP) singles together with two other of Tim's songs -

Thanks John. Hardin and Sebastian did have some links, maybe management or producer. "Tim Hardin Is A Boy" is a bit of wall graff on the back of one of the Lovin' Spoonful LPs.

Listening again to "It'll Never Happen Again", I'm wondering if it's another of Hardin's heroin metaphor songs.

Sebastian also played harmonica on Hardin’s early recordings - a subsequent quote from Tim about John - “What he’s doing is something I already did, but he’s making it and I’m happy for him” ...

I wouldn’t have remembered the photo on the back of the Spoonful’s first LP but I’ve found another (later) photo where the graffiti is not partly covered by Joe Butler’s head (and has been added to).
