Kal Mann born Kalman Cohen in Philadelphia one hundred years ago today - 6th May, 1917 [died 28th November, 2001] Lyricist and co-founder of Cameo Parkway Records with Bernie Lowe; - with Lowe or their A&R Man Dave Appell he wrote songs for many Cameo Parkway acts including Chubby Checker, The Orlons, & Dee Dee Sharp; also added words to the instrumental ‘You Can’t Sit Down’ for the Dovells.

‘(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear’ was Mann & Lowe’s biggest success prior to Cameo Parkway - they had Otis Blackwell, who had written and demoed previous Elvis hits (including the previous one, ‘All Shook Up’), perform the demo in order to improve their chances of Elvis recording the song

The Orlons performing ‘The Wah Watusi’ (Mann/Appell) last summer - the male singer Stephen Caldwell is now the only survivor from the original group - wikipedia suggests that the others are now Jean Brickley (sister of the original Orlon Shirley Brickley) together with two of Stephen’s cousins
