Born Clarence Beeks 95 years ago today, 24th March, 1922 in Oakdale, Tennessee [died 21st March, 1981] The man who influenced Lambert, Hendricks, & Ross; Georgie Fame; and Van Morrison - I think I saw his name mentioned in interviews with the last two many years before I would actually get to hear any of the man's records. A search indicates only three previous appearances on SotW apart from his inclusion in the March birthdays list - one mention in a list of the "Kings and Queens of Music" ; one in connection with Blossom Dearie who sang with him on 'Moody's Mood for Love'; and one relating to a character who appropriated his birth name for the film "Trading Places"

'Red Top' (1952) with Charlie Ferguson & Band (plus an uncredited Betty Carter)
