Not Brian ... Jimi and Dave Mason in December, 1967 with Mitch Mitchell overdubbed; plus it appears Noel Redding's bass & vocal added in the 1980s.

From what I've seen on the net, a lot of forums still claim Jones is on the recording even though not on sitar. Is it categorically the case that he isn't, John?

Well I would hesitate to be categorical about anything from almost fifty years ago even if I had been present at the session .... I have read that the box in which the original instrumental take tape was found had "Jam with Brian Jones" written on it in Jimi's handwriting which therefore prompted bootleggers to claim that Brian had played the sitar which later transpired to have been by Dave Mason.

The original instrumental has since been officially released with the information being given that it was recorded on 28th December, 1967 in the absence of Chas Chandler, but with the engineer Eddie Kramer and Jimi was joined that day only by Dave Mason. Jimi's overdubbed bass guitar and Mitch Mitchell's drums and percussion were added on the following day

I'd love to think it was Brian but I very much doubt it. Dave Mason, on the other hand, seems far more likely, given that Jimi recorded with him.

If it was possible to categorically identify this as Brian Jones, I suspect that Janie would have released it as a single with accompanying cobbled together video and limited edition 'special sausage' coloured vinyl 12" by now.
