Is her ping pong radio interview with Charlie archived anywhere? It really is a classic.

I expect she stayed polite in the face of his hatred of English folk.

He disliked, but didn't hate. It was largely based on what he felt were its artificialities in looking backwards and recreating an idealised past. Charlie wouldn't have had a guest on and then criticised a genre of music that was their own, as though its faults were somehow their responsibility.

But there was little discussion about her own music; it was more about her then recent book, "America Across The Water" which described her work as a song catcher with Alan Lomax, in which her vital role had hardly been acknowledged by him. Shirley was charm personified, and her stories and anecdotes of travels in the rural South in the late 1950s in search of white and Black musicians were priceless. She knew what her role had been, she was putting the record straight. She and Alan Lomax had been the ones who 'discovered' Fred McDowell and enabled his music to be heard so widely, and she is rightfully respected for this.

The 2002 R4 Archive Hour that Shirley presented about accompanying Alan Lomax on his 1959 US tour of the south was recently rebroadcast on 4 Extra and remains available to listen to on i-Player
