While I was going through the copious chaabi clips around Youtube, I also noticed that the utter catchiness of the Ya Rayah melody (and that riff) has caught on in many parts. Gypsy Kings have played it, among others.

This is one of the more unexpected reincarnations. It took me awhile to be convinced that it wasn't just some clever remixer and mashup king at works. But the film is from 1999, when Rachid Taha had already made the song a hit, so...

Udit Narayan and Kavita Krishnamurty are the singers, Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherjee are the dancers.

I love Ya Rayah. I had a version I used to listen to that I can't find, nor can I remember whom it was by. Maybe it was some Rachid Taha version, maybe not. I have some time I need to fill, this will be a good way to do so now that I have my spiffy new laptop. There certainly are, as you noted, many versions.

Have you ever heard this live version by Taha, Khaled and Faudel? From the concert dvd/cd "1,2,3 Soleils", with a proper big orchestra. Oh to have been there...

And I rather like this version by the Orchestra Andalous d'Israel.

No, I hadn't heard the first version, nor the second. The Orchestra Andalous D'Israel's version is lovely but I surely would love to hear an orchestra and singing like that live myself.
