Rudy Lewis, who replaced Ben E. King in the Drifters - born Charles Rudolph Harrell eighty years ago today on 23rd August, 1936 (Philadelphia) [died 20th May, 1964]

'Some Kind of Wonderful' - King/Goffin song - one of those that had Carole billed first, Rudy's lead from his first session with the Drifters produced by Leiber & Stoller in February, 1961

He had one solo single - the Ahmet Ertegun song - 'I've Loved You So Long' (1963 - possibly the B-side)

His other leads for the Drifters included on 'Up on the Roof', 'On Broadway', and 'Mexican Divorce - he was due to sing lead on 'Under the Boardwalk' but was found dead in his hotel room on the morning before the session, aged only 27. The session went ahead with Johnny Moore singing lead on 'Boardwalk' and Charlie Thomas lead on 'I don't want to go on without you'.
