For goodness sake …. Chan Romero, who wrote and first recorded ‘Hippy Hippy Shake’ in 1959 is 75 today - born Robert Lee Romero (Billings, Montana) 7th July, 1941

with Rene Hall - lead guitar

It wasn’t a hit, but he did get to record a follow-up, ‘My Little Ruby’

That might have been it for his musical career, had it not been for the UK where both records had been issued on the Columbia label; - few copies were sold but in Liverpool Hippy Hippy Shake had found its way into the hands of Bob Wooler, who a couple of years later would play it during lunchtime sessions at the Cavern resulting in the song being added to the repertoire of the Beatles and other Merseybeat groups. It has been said that by the time of the Swinging Blue Jeans’ recording Chan was working on a motor assembly line in Detroit. I hope he received all his royalties from that hit and all the subsequent versions.

Appearing at a Spanish festival last year -

Thanks John. One of the great, short, records that has so much. (Such as 'Stay' by Maurice Williams). I've always liked the little laugh in it. My Little Ruby is positively lengthy at 2.05 minutes!
