Charles Edward Anderson Berry - born in St.Louis 18th October, 1926 - Chuck's 88 today.

Here on Soul Train in 1973 answering a few questions from some young dancers who may not be entirely aware of who he is, then playing Roll 'em Pete backed by a young group called Junior Lace who of course he had just met that day

Ten years earlier in October, 1963 Chuck had recently been released from jail when Chess Records recorded him in Detroit backed by "The Berry Gordy All Stars" for a live album which remained unreleased at the time.

For the Chuck Berry fan who wants everything and does not mind buying the hits again for the 99th time, Bear Family Records are celebrating Chuck's birthday by issuing a box set of his complete studio recordings. There's also an even more expensive numbered limited edition that comes inside a full sized guitar case (88 copies only)

Today he's 89.

'You Can't Catch Me' - the earliest clip of Chuck, when he was 29 (or 30), in the 1956 Alan Freed film "Rock, Rock, Rock"

'Oh What a Thrill' (1979) - reunited with Johnnie Johnson, the single from what appears to be Chuck's final studio album "Rockit"

I've been having quite a Chuck Berry time of it as it goes. I was playing some yuppy bar in Soho and feeling a bit despondent when the sound of "Let It Rock" appeared on the house system. It completely cheered me up and I've been buzzing off it ever since.

I've always loved this one since I first heard The Troggs version when I was about 11. Sheer poetry! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zov8kEFjja4

90 today, and overlooked yet again by the Nobel Prize committee.

February 1965 in Belgium, still in his 30s - I've posted most of this before, but here it is complete and in nice quality - Chuck at his best.

Chuck Berry is 90. My, my... Glad I got to see him when I did with Ted and Norman in 2008. We got two moments of magic - and I was only hoping for one, so we did well. What I mean by that is a moment that is quintessentially Chuck and couldn't be anyone else.

What was it that disgruntled woman shouted at him when he drove off in his courtesy car after the Hackney Empire show, having refused to stop to give an autograph? "Elvis was better!"

I bet the account is in The Monumental SOTW Archive.

I don't remember that. I do remember his daughter walking across the stage with an ostentatiously large handbag and you and me and Ted all agreeing that surely the gig fee was inside it (in cash, of course).
