I love the sax.
I had the good fortune to see Tommy Ridgley at the New Orleans jazz festival years ago. I can't remember who was backing him.

Here's another with some great brass on it:

That's a corking good record with a venerable New Orleans r'n'b riff. Snooks Eaglin and Professor Longhair nailed it tight as "G Jam", but I always thought they had based it on Freddy King's "San Ho Zay". Does this predate that? I think it's an excellent excuse to listen to both of them.

For what it's worth FK recorded it in Cincinnati, 5 April 1961.

I've just caught up with this thread and the YouTube cklips have got me doing the shim Sham Shimmy round my office (not a pretty sight)

Does anyone know of a good, easy to get hold of Tommy Ridgley compilation?

The now defunct Acrobat label released a 2-CD set a few years ago, although it only includes his rcordings that were out-of-copyright (i.e. more than 50 years old) at the time of issue - it is now available here for £3.99 (plus £2.25 postage)

Many thanks John. Finbarr Music Direct is a new name to me. I have of course purchased the Tommy Ridgley comp...along with a Best of the Soul Children, a collection of Chicago Doo-Wop/RnB and an album by Northern Soul favourites Candy and the Kisses.

Yes, I yield to temptation all too easily, but at least the whole lot only cost me just over thirteen quid, including P&P

Belated response - New Orleans expert Jeff Hannusch considers 'San-Ho-Zay' to be a cover of Tommy Ridgley's 'Double Eye Whammy', but the Home of the Groove site (see below) notes an earlier use of the riff on a release on the same label by Eddie Bo - 'Every Dog Got His Day'

Also in 1966 Freddy King actually did record 'Doubled Eyed Wammy' together with another Ridgley song 'Girl from Kookamunga', crediting them to F.King - T.Rizby (or maybe Rixby, or Rizley)

Ace Records credit both tracks to Ridgley on a compilation

http://homeofthegroove.blogspot.co.uk/2 ... hammy.html

Trivial note - 'Double Eye Whammy' was inspired by Evil-Eye Fleegle in the Li'l Abner cartoon strip. A double whammy could apparently make the head of Teddy Roosevelt on Mount Rushmore weep
