Curtis Lee Mayfield - born 3rd June, 1942 (Chicago) [died 26th December, 1999]

Curtis was born seventy years ago today.

The Impressions - 'It's All Right' - great colour clip from 1965 with original 1963 stereo recording

'We the People Who are Darker than Blue' & 'Give Me Your Love' - from the film "Save the Children" - filmed in Chicago, 1972 for Jesse Jackson's Operation PUSH convention

same film and concert as the previously posted clip of Marvin Gaye & 'What's Goin' On'

'Billy Jack' (1990; prior to his accident)

Following the accident Curtis could only sing a few lines at a time while lying down, but he still made a great final album - 'New World Order' (title track; 1996)

The Impressions - Sam Gooden (original); Fred Cash (joined 1960); & Reggie Torian (first joined 1973) have recently been recording a new album for Daptone

Love Curtis. Yes, New World Order was a great goodbye from a supremely talented artist. Thanks for the clips!

And today Curtis would have been 75

‘The Makings of You’ - lip-synced performance of a song from his first solo album

“Darker than Blue” - Caryl Phillips’ BBC Omnibus documentary from 1995; posted in four parts

I looked for but couldn’t find CG’s 1999 Radio 2 appreciation “Impressions: The Story of Curtis Mayfield”
http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/d650bc8c122f ... e511c3bbf8
- a rebroadcast on 6 Music would be welcome but I guess their preference is to repeat once again the 4 part series on Curtis presented by Lenny Kravitz ...

Review of the biography written by Curtis’ son Todd, published in the US last year

There was a previous Curtis book “People Never Give Up” (2003) by Peter Burns which concentrated on the music rather than the man

Only a 7” single appears to have been released from the sessions for the album that the present day Impressions were said to be recording for Daptone five years ago - the A-side being the Curtis song ‘Rhythm’

Originally recorded by Major Lance in 1964; here lip-synced on American Bandstand (after 30 seconds of Dick Clark)
