Punks get a horn section - the beginning of the end ?

For The Saints, maybe. The Clash did OK with the occasional bit of brass, but I guess they weren't punk by then.

I think I'll direct my nephew-in-law (?) towards The Saints. He's a metal-head starting to branch out, and is showing a growing eclecticism by embracing The Kinks, Joan Jett, Johnny Cash, Nirvana, The Jam and Elvis (!!). Flatteringly, he seeks recommendations from me and I think The Saints would float his boat. Just that first album, though - right ?

That first album is wonderful. I have very fond memories of it. But if you like that, Andy, how can you not like The Stooges?

I don't dislike the Stooges, I just think they're over-revered, and other people do that kind of stuff better. It's a pervasive myth that an originator is always better than followers - true in many cases, but not all.

When you've accomplished that, make a fleeting mention of Radio Birdman. Equally venerated as The Saints and covering pretty much the same ground. Still around a few years ago and, judging from a gig I saw, still in a pretty good shape.

Personally I think The Saints were cooler though.

Actually, one of their best ever songs, Know Your Product, from the second album features a good dose of saxophone also.

Their second album Eternally Yours is my favourite - great songs, interesting arrangements, intelligent acerbic lyrics. One of the great punk albums. When I was Charlie's ping pong guest I played This Perfect Day off it and Charlie said "I didn't like that kind of music when it was first released and I still don't." I did and still do.

Oh, just heard that the world's richest woman is an Australian mining magnet and, by all accounts, thoroughly unpleasant. The Saints would have had a song for her: Orstralia.

Examples please!

As usual I haven't heard much of The Saints but I still treasure "Do the Robot" from the 12 inch e.p.
