A great singer. Very tough voice. The unique way she bites vowels, almost beats up syllabyles. A troubled life. I once owned most of her 70s albums and found them compulsively listenable. These days I don't go there so often but, yes, a master vocalist.

I was driving in a car with a friend the other day and he had "From A Whisper To A Scream" in the cd player. It has a pantheon of great musicians playing on it; Bernard Purdie, Cornell Dupree, Eric Gale, Pee Wee Ellis and others. Wonderful soulful R&B.
