Mable Lee - born 2nd August, 1921 (Atlanta, Georgia) - "The Queen of the Soundies" - she's 90 today - previously featured here a few months back on a Louis Jordan clip that Paul S posted. She appeared at the London Palladium for eighteen months during 1947/8.

Here's two from ca. 1945 with Deryck Sampson (piano) & group -

'Half Past Jump Time'

'The Cat Can't Dance'

What an amazing looker & dancer she was.
I'd have been in the queue at The Palladium, that's for sure. Anyone got access to a time machine?
Last time I went there was in the late 70's. Neil Diamond in rehearsal. Didn't inspire me to go to the full gig.

The wonderful Mable Lee (often aka "Mabel Lee"), the “Queen of the Soundies” is 95 today. Wikipedia informs that she started performing at the age of four.

and with Louis Jordan in the 1947 film “Reet, Petite, and Gone” - ‘Ain’t That Just Like a Woman’, a song credited to Fleecie Moore (Louis’ then wife) & Claude Demetrius* - Chuck Berry later recorded a version for his 1966 LP “Fresh Berry’s”

and filmed singling ‘It had to be you’ at a party in 2013 when she was 92

*co-incidentally Claude Demetrius (aka Claude DeMetrius or Demetruis) was born one hundred years ago tomorrow - 3rd August, 1916 (Bath, Maine) [died 1st May, 1998]. He wrote or co-wrote several songs for Elvis including on a similar theme, ‘Mean Woman Blues’, and ‘Hard Headed Woman’; also ‘Santa bring my baby back to me’.

Louis Jordan regretted putting songs in his wife’s name after they became divorced.
