Syl Johnson (1st July Birthday)

Sylvester Thompson - born 1st July, 1936 (Holly Springs, nr. Lamar, Mississippi) - 75 today if 1936 is correct for his year of birth (other years are available).

On "Chic-a-go-go", Chicago TV, towards the end of last year, promoting the "Complete Mythology" boxed set (6 LPs + 4 CDs) of his pre-Hi Records recordings - he says that it is the first time he has received a royalty cheque on his 1967/71 catalogue -
'Is It Because I'm Black?' (live with Bernard Reed - bass); 'That's Why (I Love You So)' (lip-sync - 1971 record)
interview; 'Come On Sock It to Me' (first hit from 1967 - partially lip-synced)

In the 1950s he played with several Chicago bluesmen including Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, and Jimmy Reed. This was his first recording; guitarist with Billy Boy Arnold - 'Kissing at Midnight' (1965)

Today he’s 80

‘Take Me to the River’ - his biggest hit, he had the first version released as a single after Al Green’s (LP only) original; here live in 1975 - identified by one YT comment as being from the Memphis Blues Festival
