Nice one. He was on tour here in 1983 to promote a new LP, a segment of which was with.....Canon & Ball. I kid you not. That raised some mirth and merriment with editors of blues magazines.

Well - both of those connections, Chas and Dave and Cannon and Ball, make absolute sense. C & D's "Aint No Pleasing You" I always thought owed a little to Clarence's "But I Do." His influence is clear. A lot of humour comes through in the individual songs and live shows. One might almost evoke the words light entertainment and variety here. A deep love of Rock 'n Roll and R 'n B for sure but no pomposity about it at all - no intimations of cool. I'm sure Chas and Dave have shared a bill before with Jim Davidson and possibly with Cannon and Ball. Some people find it too uncomfortable and too uncool to touch but, in the way that Gram Parsons always wanted to get the hippies and the truck drivers (red necks) together, it ought to work well on occasions. Though I never found Cannon and Ball funny at all.

It's his 80th today.

'On Bended Knees' (1961) - one of several Bobby Charles' songs the Frogman recorded - Bobby Charles own version 'On Bended Knee' (one only) had been on the B-side of 'Later Alligator' in 1955

'Think It Over' (1966) - named by Clarence as one of his favourites, credited on the record to Huey Meaux, but actually written by Jimmy Donley who had earlier recorded the song in 1962 - the year before he killed himself

30 minute "oral history" with Clarence confirming his d.o.b. then talking about his life and folks he appeared with including Rush Limbaugh
