Good call, Andy. I couldn't agree more. A decent thunderstorm (preferably when I'm out in it) would be just great.

Such a gorgeous song, which I first heard from a somewhat less impeccable source than the Temptations, ie, the 'B' side of "Pool Hall Richard" - which I can't find on YouTube, but I did find this:

That's a find! And here is another of the greatest rain songs, so romantic and full of ache it could make you sob:

Willie Nelson: "Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain". A much older song that pre-dates Willie's early 70's recording, but his is probably the definitive version.

A lovely live recording, with a great solo on the most famous Martin guitar ever, ol' Trigger

1:57 of perfection; - song written by Carole King & Howard Greenfield - there's also a lovely demo-like version by Carole issued on the "Dimension Dolls" LP (not available on YouTube)

Thanks John, that's a Desert Island Disc - although I'd be hard pushed to choose between the perfection of the Everly's and the homely simplicity of Carole's original demo which you can buy for 45p plus p&p here:

Can't really match any of those musically, and this is a bit corny, but continuing the theme:

And was always surprised this ex-Miracle didn't have more of a solo career:

Wow, so many songs I love in one place.

Prince, 'Purple Rain', from a film edit

And, since Andy started with The Temptations, here is David Ruffin singing Tony Joe White's 'Rainy Night In Georgia'. I read that it was recorded in 1970 but Motown never released it. Brook Benton's version was released that same year. I like how David Ruffin quietly and without hurry or drama grabs ahold of the song.

The fine Jamaican group The Techniques would seem to prefer a bit of rain too:

Well this is my favourite "rain" song. It's soppy, it's wet, it's even the product of that despised beast, an American singer-songwriter. So sue me (and please overlook the naff video that goes with it):

Aaron Neville's early cover of John Hiatt's "It Feels Like Rain". Hiatt's is possibly even better, but Neville is more entitled to sing about the sticky heat and Ponchatrain.

No need to apologise for Patty Griffin, Rob, she writes great songs and she sings them wonderfully. Who could ask for more ?
