I just came out this morning for a coffee in downtown Daegu, which is festooned (now there's a curious word) with posters of Usain Bolt. It seems Korea has a way of hosting eventful 100 metres finals, with Ben Johnson 23 years ago, and now this. I came across a group of fellow countrymen in the stadium last night, and we were disappointed with the Irish runner's disqualification in the women's 400 metres. Charlie would have been sad about Christine Ohorogu's similar fate.

I saw the "Usain Bolt finals". I thought the just-one-miss-and-you're-out policy is rather harsh. It used to be two the last time I have checked.
Still, at least the young talent Yohan Blake got his chance and used it.

I conquered new ground yesterday and baked bread (with success) yesterday. It was (is) a loaf that takes little kneading, not much yeast but a longish fermenting time. Mine stayed a bit flat, but the taste is great. And I made it myself, which of course is the kind of a little ego boost we all need from time to time.

Like you Kas I wasn't up to date on the false start rule............does seem harsh. Meanwhile, unlike you I have been largely avoiding loaves of bread in an attempt to lose a little weight. I need to restrain my intake. I need a baker's shop that sells it by the slice.

I'm VERY annoyed at this one strike and you're out malarky. Is this going to be the rule at the Olympics? Gawd help us if it is.

I'm on the Ryvita.

The thing I'm most stoked about is buying tickets to see Staff Benda Bilili September 18 at Seattle Town Hall, my favourite Seattle venue alongside Egan's Ballard Jam House, where I saw Rupa and the April Fishes last month.

kas, well done you beat me to it re: bread making. I keep meaning to do it after my recent attempts at pizza dough proved succesful.

Maybe we should have a Food Section on the Forum? I noticed you sort of apologised (on another thread) at being a 'foodie' but despite the awful tag there must be more than you & I who love food and enjoy making it. Every birthday now (on my request) my wife buys me a place on a 'food training course'. So far, from the prood of the pudding, she thinks she's quids in.

We had one, very briefly, and it was a good thread - at least I found it fascinating and informative and funny. If I could remember any of the posts I could do a search...ah yes! Gordon Neill's deep fried Mars bars! I hadn't known they truly existed. And of course, Ted's curried goat. Here you go, Gary.

[I've a good simple recipe for pizza dough that one can stash in the fridge overnight (or longer, or even freeze though I've never done so). I throw it together at night and then use it the next day to make pesto cheese rolls that everyone seems to like. I'd happily send it to you if you like. It's in American - 'cups' rather than grams, etc - though.]

Judith, I'd love you to PM me the simple Pizza dough recipe - "cups rather than grams" ...who am I to argue you gave us 'The Wire'.

Anyone have any thoughts on why the Food Section didn't last?

Thanks for the "Food" thread link, Judith. Maybe we'll soon see a "Return of Food" or "Revenge of Food" section, or "Food: Recipe for Success/Disaster"...

My apologies for being a foodie were only contextual: here we are going to an Indian religious feast (albeit a small and intimate one) to a makeshift Krishna temple, and my thoughts were firmly on the meal I knew was coming at the end...

(I have tried my hand on "cooking indian" several times, but I still need loads of practice: sometimes I come up with something rather good, the next time I fail miserably. Not to mention the endless regional differences...)

On second thoughts, "Revenge of Food" sounds a bit too much like "Something I ate last night"...
So perhaps not - or save it for that particular kind of stories.

Kas, I can't get Indian food where I live and it was nearly impossible to learn the basic whys and wherefores through books - like you said the regional differences and names of spices and dishes alone are daunting. Then I found the much loved Manjula (auntie) on YouTube. I think many of her viewers watch her because they are homesick or needing of a calming, honest presence as much as to learn her cooking! Her recipes are very basic and clear and from there you can gain an inkling about when to add which spices, which flours to use, the different names (regional) for different foods. I would look at her 'most viewed'. The samosas turned out perfectly as did the besan puda. She is a Jain so doesn't use garlic or onions - nor is she from the region that uses coconut milk or cashews - but you can easily learn to adapt or relate her recipes to those which do (like adding the garlic/onions with the ginger in the beginning). She gave me sort of a base to work from, something to relate other recipes to.

More flamboyant (one must ignore his opening music), yet also instructive and comparing his recipes and instructions with Manjula's on the same dish was when Indian cooking started to make sense to me - vahchef

I think I should have started a new thread with a title to do with food...
[Edit: instead of starting a new thread, I revived the old one titled "Food"

A new thread might be a good idea... I'll keep this short and get back on the subject in "Food".
