I take it that you have posted this, Norman, to alleviate our understandable anxiety surrounding the Mayan prophecy that the world will end this coming Friday. Certainly there is a howling wind forecast for these parts tonight and lashings of rain too, but having seen nothing about it on the front of either The Daily Express or Mail I think we can rest easy.

Nothing in the Daily SiegHeil? I thought the Mayan prophecy would have some impact on house prices.

We could all go out with a sing song along with The Increds. They knew, back in 1968 they knew.

All together now:
"Maya, Maya
All this world is just a play
Be thou the joyful player"

On second thoughts, this song is over nine minutes and I could only get half-way through. Maybe Solomon Burke or an early Motown track would be a better bet.

At the risk of stating the bleedin' obvious, maybe something a little more, er, apocalyptic is in order:

You beat me to it, Rob. Yet I do recall that before The Doors, came this little anthem...

(I believe it came out earlier than 1965, as is stated below the video)

Is that a theremin I hear in there? Or is the pedal steel player a bit drunk?

Here is a possibly useful instruction film. If you watch more than the first five minutes of this, you might wish that tomorrow's end is nigh actually does come on if these "preppers' are going to be there to re-stock our intellectual gene pool.

The highest notes do indeed sound like a theremin, but the lower ones give it away. I think the steel guitar player on the show could have been Jerry Byrd for Wikipedia has him as having been one of the backing players for The Bobby Lord Show. Though, as you state, the notes do sound a bit inebriated now and again and Jerry Byrd's playing was held in high regard? But then again, he was very taken with Hawaiian music and in this clip, the soaring is reminiscent of that (and of the theremin).

Then you all might as well go out laughing, this is the sort of stupid, inconsequential nonsense that reduces me to a hopeless heap. Yes the whole snorting, eyes & nose streaming, incoherent idiot laughter. You have been warned!

Speak for yourself, Rob. Done your Xmas food shopping yet?

That's a lovely one, John. I don't know it. Highly appropriate. It's got Bert Berns written all over it. Great guitar playing - do you know who it was?

I have the personnel listing for the session, but I don't know who was playing lead - maybe Bill Suyker, but it could have been Al Shackman .... or Bob Bushnell ... :-

Lamar Wright - trumpet; Tony Studd - bass trombone; Charles DeAngelis - tenor sax; Haywood Henry - baritone sax; Paul Griffin - piano; Bill Suyker, Al Shackman, Bob Bushnell - guitars; Russ Saunders - electric bass; Gary Chester - drums; Dee Dee Warwick, Cissy Houston, Sylvia Shemwell, Estelle Brown - backing vocals; Gary Sherman - arranger; Bert Berns - producer (& Bert wrote the song with Wes Farrell)

Thanks John. The mighty backroom boys and girls. Mighty, but largely unknown and unheralded.

Paul Griffin does play piano on one of my favourite Dylan songs, "One Of Us Must Know (Sooner Or Later)", and also on "American Pie".

A favourite of mine too. I also understand it was Paul Griffin playing piano on 'Like a Rolling Stone' (although Frank Owens, who played on earlier takes, is often credited) - and Burt Bacharach usually employed him on his sessions. Al Kooper has suggested that it was probably Paul playing the (much mentioned on SoTW) solo on 'Baby It's You' by the Shirelles.

btw - The world did not end
