The way we talk

I have realised something this week. Extremely trivial yet ....

Addresses. When it's Something Street we put the emphasis on the first word. Oxford Street , Bond Street , Regent's Street etc
When it's Something Road , and as far as my thinking has gone so far on this, also square, avenue , and park, we put the emphasis on that second word. Charing Cross ROAD, Trafalgar SQUARE, Dulwich AVENUE, Regent's PARK etc

I haven't found an exception yet unless it's a High Street, where the emphasis falls on High

Who can i tell about this exciting discovery? Apart from SOTW of course

well I've just dropped by here and have read your post David, and in a spirit of aiding your research, notion, or hypothesis, I personally would always stress the first word (ie the specific part of each address/place), or give equal stress, in all your examples, so I don't agree. Maybe I'm a statistical outlier tho'

I did wonder if It might differ regionally, but down here people definitely emphasize as i suggested. It's never TRAFALGAR Square for example. Research continues

David, I think you're right. But I shall spend some time trying to find examples that contradict the thesis!
