I thought it was very funny. (I'm not quite certain who Arcade Fire are myself). By the way, the term 'hipster' over here (in California anyways and if I've got it right) is used somewhat disparagingly to describe those of the younger set who might have been called yuppies a while ago - or their parents were - who, with affectation, indulge in the 'cool' (non-mainstream stuff). This is not really a statement about the hipsters of yore, the beatniks, except of course when hipsters trawl used clothing stores for beatnik garb. Is this usage the same over there where you are?

Not sure there is a current, 'live' category of hipster here; it's a word you'd only hear drenched in irony.

Have you seen this commercial over there? I wonder if it is a play on Hipsters. The music is pretty good anyway.

Those dudes look more like "homies from the 'hood" maybe? A funny commercial though - more than a bit different than the usual car ads.

"Hipster" here seems to be used in the same sense as Judith mentions. I don't think I could make a distinction between "emo" and "hipster", but it appears "irony" AND using the right kind of peer group aknowledged accessories of the week are still de rigeur...

"Hipster olympics":

I prefer the older meaning and usage of the "hipster" word, myself. Damn young people making mockery of everything sacred and otherwise. Never would have happened in my day!

I think that it's a play on "Hamsterdam' as featured in 'The Wire':

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamsterdam

At the start of the commercial, one of the street signs points to Hamsterdam. Looks like Kia are so desperate that they're targeting their ads at drug dealers. Or people who watch 'The Wire'.

Chris Morris and Charlie Brooker took the mickey out of British Hipsters before anyone else (which makes them Hipsters) here:

and here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X6APGN1 ... re=related
The whole series of Nathan Barley is on Youtube and it's hilarious.

Hi Willy. This stuff is quite new to me and strikes me as funnier than Portlandia. Maybe because it's British and Portland is, ahem, closer to home or 'to the knuckle'.

I know it's been posted here before, but I reckon this really is the last word on hipster-ism

Jamie, Defo worth seeing again :D as I learn something new every time. There used to be a really good live version of this song up but It seems to of been taken down. Probably because it would have been hated on by all the Hipsters and by all the Hipster Haters.

Great to see that again. The bastards have ruined my manor, I'm sure they'll be coming to yours soon if they haven't already.

Meanwhile, whilst not strictly relevant, this is perhaps not unrelated:
