Latin Grammys 2008

I like the Latin Grammys. They’re a laugh, much more entertaining than the ordinary Grammys and buried amongst the specialist categories there is some decent music. The nominations for the Latin Grammys have just been announced and I’m just going through the list looking for names forumistas will recognise.

The big news is:

Buika’s Niña de Fuego has been nominated in one of the four major awards, Album of the Year. Not flamenco or folk or any of those specialist categories, but your actual album of the year.

Make no mistake about it, this is a real result. The previous two winners have been Shakira and Juan Luis Guerra, and indeed Buika will probably lose this year to established latin pop/rock names like Juanes or Café Tacvba. But still this nomination is good news – there is still hope of good music getting officially recognised.

Other interesting nominations based on a quick skim:

Manu Chao: best alternative CD for La Radiolina and video for Me Llaman Calle (if they show it, I hope they brush the cobwebs off it first).

Mariza: best folk CD for Terra. Folk?!

And unsurprisingly then, Buika and Mariza’s producer Javier Limón is up for producer of the year.

Oh well. It was a nice idea. None of the above won anything. Buika was up against Colombian pop-rocker Juanes who was always likely to win every category he was nominated in. Although Buika did get to present an award and was invited by her co-presenter to sing the chorus of 'Volver, Volver' acapella.

Some decent music in the rest of the show but nothing special this year, and the presentation makes Eurovision look positively restrained in comparison.
