Now That's What I Call World Music Vol.I

Actually, I think that's a great idea for the ultimate reach-a-new-audience populist world music comp.

I suggested it a few years ago to a well-known specialist world music compilation label and they enthusiastically embraced the idea, but then discovered that the title was copyrighted by EMI/Virgin and couldn't be used by anyone else.

Sorry. If that makes me cheap for pandering to the lowest common denominator I plead guilty! I had hoped it might take great music to a new audience that might not otherwise listen to it...

My personal nightmare would be 'Toumani Diabate Meets The Boston Pops Orchestra'. Or perhaps 'Status Quo Play The Hits Of Tinariwen'...

Nigel, I was thinking more along the lines of how many volumes I'd need to buy, rather than the tackiness of the title. I happily hold up my hand and admit I'm an enthusiastic 'lowest common denominator' and embracer of world music compilations.

Now we've got that out of the way, let's think of another title .....!

Couldn't you do Now That's What I Would Have Called World Music If I Wouldn't Have Sued By EMI/Virgin, If I Wouldn't Have Been Castigated On The Sound Of The World Forum, And If World Music Wasn't Just A Box In A Record Store According To Ian Anderson?

Sorry about that. Absolutely unforgivable.

I'll take these two! And if you replaced Ry Cooder with Andy Palacio, I'd take the pipe bands of Scotland album, too.

Various Bands Starting with the Letter 'Q'

And as an unreconstructed old hippie who cut his musical teeth in the late 1960s, I'd take this one, as long as it doesn't include Queen.

It has to be on vinyl rather than CD, with one side of Quicksilver Messenger Service playing their 20 minute version of Bo Diddley's Who Do You Love from the 1969 album Happy Trails and the second side featuring the greatest hits of Quintessence (who I seem to remember once sung without the slightest trace of irony: "Things look great in Notting Hill Gate, we all sit around and meditate"!).

And there would be a bonus 45 (remember it's vinyl) containing two stunning but never heard demos by an unknown Liverpool band called the Quarrymen...

What the xxxx?

Sorry Nigel, before you get too excited, it only includes songs that start with the letter 'X'. These things are important. Otherwise punters would have every right to ask for their money back.

Damn!

I can only think of Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky Mick & Tich's Xanadu (and even that's a bit of a cheat as I think the full title was The Legend of Xanadu). There are probably lots of Prince songs that begin with an X, around the themes of X-Cess, X-Press, X-Stacy and so on but I wouldn't really know...

Gordon, you can't possibly mean that favourite of Dads what dance, "Xavi" by Peret?

I loved that song, but thought the lyrics went "lie around and fornicate." That's why I went to Notting Hill Gate in 1971, anyway. I suppose I missed the good old days of innocent non-ironic meditation. I still have the Quintessence album In Blissful Company with that song on. I bought it at the Ipswich Music Centre before going up to Notting Hill Gate and falling into a life of depravity and more fun than meditating. Perhaps I shouldn't admit to owning that album in this forum for fear of ridicule, or someone asking me privately to please make a copy for them — but, you know, I haven't listened to it for at least two years! Yeah, I'll digitize it but whoever wants it will owe me — and I'll own them.
