What is "world music"?

I'm a newbie from Tokyo with an honest question...
Can someone give me a quick explanation of what WORLD MUSIC is?

Tibetan pop music IS, but Japanese pop music isn't? African R+B from the 60s IS? But American R+B from the 60s isn't? Is Bjork world music? Is Seal world music? Is Youssou N'Dour world music?

If I live in Theran, does that mean that Iranian pop music isn't world music? Or does that only hold true for people in London and New York? How about Tokyo? Is a Brazilian who records in LA world music? Is a white British person who records in Beijing world music?

Thank you, Bird

Hiyah Bird, and welcome.

The simplest definition - or at least the one that I go along with - is the description used by fRoots magazine, which says Local Music From Out There.

For my part, if it sounds good, and it's not in my own language, then it's World Music. I will now say "over & out" as I'm bowing out of this one: there are other more detailed, and elaborately explained definitions, than this, but I can't be bothered pontificating. Listen, enjoy, most importantly buy - - - and call it what you will.

Old rock'n'rollers joke: What does World Music sound like when played backwards? World Music.

(I hasten to add that I do not personally subscribe to the attitude and worldview that this witticism might or might not imply. I merely provide documentation.)
