If you've read "The Axman's Jazz", you'll know that Louis Armstrong appears as a supporting character in the novel. There is mention of another trumpet player who kept a hankie over his keys to prevent anyone else seeing how he played it.

Norman: I don't understand that - the hanky would have to cover the fingers, not just the keys.
