This might only interest a few of you, but it's a brilliant piece using the recent 'controversy' about David Willetts being prevented from speaking at Cambridge to make some wider points about how the current government is setting out to destroy universities as we have known them

Thank you, Andy. This piece did interest me.

Personally, I have found when attempting to express a dissenting view that the only recourse I have to exercise my freedom of speech when those who are enamored by their own eloquence and stature (or on this side of the pond - distending the bullhorns of ignorance) are interminably exercising theirs has been to tell them to stfu (basically) while they are mid-stride and in front of an audience. After all, freedom of speech includes the freedom to be heard and one does tire of being bullied into silence or buried under bullshit.

Excellent article, Andy. I will pass it on to my recently politicised daughter who is in her first term at university - studying English Literature.

Cf Gove's keynote speech today, an interesting document which I'm still mulling over, in which he takes as his text, and quotes for resounding climactic effect, Gladstone's Third Midlothian Address:

"All honour then to the University, because while it prepares students in the most useful manner for the practical purposes of life, it embodies a protest against the excessive dominion of worldly appetites and supplies a powerful agency to neutralizing the specific dangers of this age."

Shome contradictions shurely??
