I saw the new David Byrne concert movie ‘Ride, Rise, Roar’ last night, and it’s great.
Obviously Bryne knew he could never compete with ‘Stop Making Sense’ but this is an admirable companion piece to that seminal movie, doing enough things that are different to justify its existence as more than just a “something for the fans” concert movie
The use of contemporary dancers doing elaborate, witty and weird routines all around him and the band (which the band on occasion press-ganged into joining in too) means there’s visually never a dull moment. And the fact the music is the material he’s written over the years with Eno also meant that there’s rarely a dull musical moment either. Although I must confess much of the material on the new album doesn’t do much for me, even these songs take on a new visceral substance in this live context.
Between the songs there’s footage on how the project came together, the rehearsals, and a tantalisingly short glimpse of Eno and Byrne discussing their working relationship.
Well worth seeing - and also worth seeing in a cinema so as to get that VOLUME (I had to stop myself from clapping on more than one occasion).
