Brasil Music Exchange – Episode 2 with Jody Gillett
Recife and Rio de Janeiro

http://www.mixcloud.com/Brazil/brasil-m ... change-02/?

Image

This edition of Brasil Music Exchange is dedicated to the very best new music from Recife and Rio de Janeiro.

What put Recife on the map was the ground-breaking Manguebeat cultural movement that kick-started an unprecedented creative explosion. Today musicians from Recife have a singular energy. In this show, we salute the heavy, prowling sound of Manguebeat godfathers Nação Zumbi, go deep into rural rhythms with Alessandra Leão and float in Lulina’s lo-fi dreams.

A long-time major music capital of Brazil, Rio de Janeiro is most associated with bossa nova and samba. Today the next generation of artists shakes up any assumptions with all kinds of new sounds. We play the latest by sought-after producer Kassin (a left-field love-song with fuzz guitar), tune in to the funky afrobeat of charismatic rapper BNegão and go all dark and spacey with Seu Jorge and Almaz. Enjoy your trip!

In this edition of Brasil Music Exchange we focus on two music powerhouses –São Paulo and Salvador.
São Paulo is a megacity of over 20 million people and it’s the buzz at the heart of the independent music scene in Brazil. We feature music from the forefront of the SP new wave right now, with Metá Metá and their “apocalyptic afropunk”, the gorgeous pop melodies of Tulipa, indie rock princes Holger and hip hop star Criolo.
Heading up to the North-East, Salvador is the capital of the Bahia – the state with the strongest African cultural heritage in Brazil and the source of so much musical history. Our playlist highlights include Os Nelsons, with their electronic energy blast, the sweet reggae vocals of Soraia Drummond and the candomblé-powered hip hop of Opanijé. Salvador is famous for musical innovation. Take a listen and find out why!
