Another Suitcase Another Hall with satirical punk poet/accordionist Geoff Berner on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... -may-2018/
When we spotted Geoff Berner’s suitcase in the corridor at Resonance FM our first suspicion was that our guest might be staying overnight, but as he explained later, our show was the rather tasty filling sandwiched between gigs in Wales and Brighton. That’s life on the road for you, and with Geoff it’s songs in the key of life with the soul of klezmer and the pogo of punk. His accordion is his melodic partner in wondrous wordplay around insightful and astute observations on the world social order – ‘’my mind absorbs music through the lyrics before my body feels it.’’ On this AWIL you’ll hear from Geoff’s new album Canadiana Grotesquica, plus freshly improvised material conjured up in our studio, highlighting his sharp-witted skills as a songwriter. Geoff also has a unique ability to connect with the many us that are not in the 1% club of financial elites, so that we’re all rooting for revolution, and for once, really are ‘all in this together’. Join that revolution tonight at Balabam in London when Geoff Berner takes to the stage at Chilli Fried, alongside comedian Jeremy Hardy, and the Kosher Nostra DJs!

Made in Dublin, Sounds Like London, Feels like Universal – gifted singer/songwriter Kal Lavelle on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... -may-2018/ Irish Londoner, Kal Lavelle launches her debut album 'For The Loved And Lost' at St.Giles in the Fields on June 1st. It’s a landmark day for Kal, as well as the Mayor’s brand new music month ‘Sounds Like London’ which will bathe our capital in a sea of wondrous music by homegrown talent throughout June! SLL is championing women and grassroots venues in its inaugural year, and Kal is a passionate spokesperson with personal experience about the challenges facing musicians, particularly compounded by gender inequality. To redress the balance she provides a platform for up & coming artists by running the popular music night called We Love Shows. Although Kal is ‘emerging’ herself, she’s already played with soul/funk legend James Brown who’s autographed her Yamaha guitar, and supported Ed Sheeran on tour. Fair enough, Ed is a mate, but then he’s got lots of those, and decided to pick a friend he knew could match his skills. Kal is the woman who can, with her liquidy voice, perfect pitch, and poignant lyrics, that spotlight the lows of love we can all empathise with. Hands up who hasn’t ever been heartbroken? Hear an exclusive first play of Kal’s CD ‘For the Loved and Lost’ on this AWIL, and catch her while you can before her star rises to the highest heights! https://www.london.gov.uk/what-we-do/ar ... lds-church #London #folkmusic #worldmusic #music #radio #Ireland #Dublin #newtalent #SoundsLikeLondon #womeninmusic #KalLavelle #EdSheeran #JamesBrown #livemusic

Genius artist Alban Low presents his wonderful new London Violins project on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... june-2018/
For two years, Alban Low has been capturing some of our finest guests on AWIL with his pen, adding an extra luscious string to our bow and gifting bands with unique, bespoke portraits of themselves in action. It’s bowed strings that form the centre-piece for his brilliant new chapbook, London Violins, an illustrated summit of eminent musicians matching Alban’s visual virtuosity with their violins, and amongst his gallery of stars you’ll find Irish fiddler James Patrick Gavin, Indian-fusion maestro Robert Atchison, klezmer queen Olga Baron, and live on this show, iyatra Quartet’s Alice Barron and Balagan Cafe Band’s Richard Jones. In recognition of Alban’s outstanding talent, the world renowned Yehudi Menuhin School commissioned him to create an exhibition featuring some of the most prominent British violinists, working in the Jazz & World sector, and that project has now blossomed into the first of a series of compact, colourful chapbooks, bringing art together with music, vibrant and accessible for all. Alban’s artist eye harmonises perfectly with the musician’s ear, and his lightning one-line sketches are rich in fluidity and spontaneity, simultaneously expressing music in motion through art. Alban says, ‘‘I like the challenge of trying to represent movement on the static page, and yet you still want it to dance before your eyes. You want to hear the music in the lines .’’ With a swish of the pen, a pluck of the strings, and a stroke of genius, hear from the brilliant mind behind London Violins on this AWIL, and the man we are so proud & privileged to have as our radio show artist-in-residence. London Violins will be stored at the British Library and in other fine institutions but grab a copy for yourself here: https://sampsonlow.co/2018/06/04/london ... alban-low/ Find out more about Alban Low: https://sampsonlow.co/

Spiritual string duo Balladeste on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... june-2018/
Synchronicity takes on a new meaning when hearing Balladeste’s circle of trust, strings, and sound. Where South Indian violinist Preetha Narayanan begins, British cellist Tara Franks ends, except there isn’t a beginning or ending and we get blissfully immersed in their circular empathy. Both women are classically trained, but now running free & boundless, having forged a unique partnership over ten years, weaving in and out of each other’s voices as musicians and composers. They converse fluidly from string to string, undulating through time and space, drawing listeners inside their melodic boudoir, and melting the universe into a single entity. Balladeste’s debut album Relic is available on Bandcamp and iTunes now, plus a CD of devotional songs is already in the pipeline as a follow up. Listen out for that as it’ll be sung via violin and cello through one perfect voice called Balladeste. www.balladeste.co.uk

Superb singer/songwriters Bryde & Karima Francis on this A World in London! Click here: https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/aw ... ma-francis The Mayor of London’s new music month continues through June across our vibrant city, shining a light on female music-makers. Two artists supported by #SoundsLikeLondon dropped into our studio this week adding to an all-star women playlist! Solo artist Bryde was first up on our agenda and spoke about her initial foray into music as Sarah Howells, picking up a guitar aged 16 in her hometown of Pembrokeshire before joining indie/folk band Paper Aeroplanes. Bryde’s fabulous new album, ‘Like An Island’, has been mastered & remixed by women at her pioneering label Seahorse Music , which will be one of the female-led Independent recording companies showcasing in Berwick Street on June 16th! Bryde’s vision beyond her ethereal vocals and sensitive songs is about women running things behind the mic as well in front. Karima Francis who performs live and exquisitely on this AWIL, sings to this tune too, producing her own tracks, and playing every instrument from drums to keys. Her career to date has included stage shares with Paul Simon and Amy Winehouse, so catch her in session right here before she joins Suzanne Vega on tour later this month!

Exceptional & eloquent singer/songwriter Eliza Shaddad on this A World in London! Click here: https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/aw ... za-shaddad
Eliza Shaddad’s new single ‘My Body’ comes out this week, pointing to her fantastic debut album ‘Future’, which is scheduled for release in October. Aptly titled as Eliza’s own future beckons brightly, lit by her talent for soulful, sincere song-writing and her impeccable crystal clear vocals. Eliza is a Guildhall jazz graduate but uncluttered by formal music tuition and when you hear her pure, perfect, lilting voice it’s as free as a bird, gliding through notes & marvellous melodies, drawing in attention from illustrious producers including dance music titans Clean Bandit. Eliza’s voice & lyrics echo her outlook, similarly open and searching, limitlessly embracing any genre that catches her ear, and because she’s so skilled and versatile this includes neo-folk, grunge, acoustic ballads and big productions, as well as Scottish & Irish music, referencing her mixed heritage which no doubt is likely to lead to an exploration into or beyond her Sudanese roots too. Eliza is championed by PRS for Music and the Mayor of London’s new music month, Sounds Like London, and has preceded its aim this year to shine a light on women artists, through her female arts collective Girls, Girls, Girls, which also supports anti-FGM charity Orchid Project. Catch her unplugged & magnificent on this AWIL, and live at The Lexington on July 9th alongside Bedouine! www.elizashaddad.com

After interviewing percussion guru Pete Lockett on AWIL in October, too much was left unsaid and we had to have another innings with him! This time round we caught up after his June tours in Greece, China, and Canada, just before he jets off to Japan and seals off new albums with Cuban percussionist Luis Conte and Airto’s daughter Diana Purim, adding to his already huge who’s who list that includes Peter Gabriel, The Verve, Robert Plant, Dido, and Joji Hirota! Pete’s voracious zest for life, infused with world rhythms, is infectious and irrepressible, and it was a privilege to see some of his brilliant drumscapes created live in our studio. Magnificent music-makers - Of The People - Kabantu on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... june-2018/
What happens when a bunch of students from the Royal Northern College Of Music graduate? If they’re called Kabantu, they throw out the rule book and throw in a mighty section of the world. Forming their quintet 4 years ago, Kabantu are filled with passion for every sound, rhythm and reel they can lay their instrumentalised fingers on. To hear them play is a dynamic treat, filled with daring twists and turns that always leave you guessing, and gasping for breath. Sometimes the journey is so precarious you’re not sure that they’re going to make it around some musical hairpin bends, but then they do, taking you on an adrenaline-fuelled, cross-cultural ride of exhilaration. Hear the virtuosic members of Kabantu live on this AWIL, ranging from fast n’ furious fiddler Katie Foster, percussion goddess Delia Stevens, busking guitar-man Ben Sayah, big Ali McMath on big instruments like double-bass, didgeridoo, and banjo, plus gifted cellist Abel Selaocoe. Each band member has an inspirational story of how they got to where they are now, especially Abel whose unconventional route into classical music began in a South African township, minus a cello. These days for Kabantu, life is lived dangerously, on the edge, and just as their repertoire is packed with possibility and an infinite world of musicality, so too is their schedule: the occasional Prom, gigs at Bridgewater Hall, or in care-homes and schools as part of their work with Live Music Now. True to form, they nipped down from Manchester last night to play a gig in East London, came over to A World in London today, and then raced away straight after the show to perform at the Courtyard Theatre in Hoxton, leaving us dizzy in a whirlwind of sound, dazzled by their brilliance. Kabantu, from the people, for the people, and Of The People. www.kabantu.com

Brazilian grooves through a global perspective with Mishka Adams & Beto Caletti on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... july-2018/
Wednesday was already a perfect day in LondonTown, with the sun beaming down on SOAS Radio’s studio in Bloomsbury and across to The Shard near Resonance FM. England’s soccer team had made it through to the World Cup quarter-finals, Wimbledon tennis was in full swing, and everyone seemed to be basking in the joy of REAL summer days – almost as rare in England as international football victories. But, the best was yet to come on A World in London! During our first show of this Wednesday, on SOAS Radio, we were bowled over by Orkney-born bodhran guru, Aimée Leonard, and her superlative multi-talents! Then, at Resonance FM, culture & ocean-crossing duo, Mishka Adams & Beto Caletti gave us a divine mini-concert of Baiao, Bossa Nova, and other South American goodies, sung in four languages, performed with passion and infused with their unique chemistry. Days don’t get any better than this, so make sure you revisit these two A World in London shows online, anytime, anyplace. Rock n’Dhol island Punk, Ms. Mohammed on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... july-2018/
Ms Mohammed has been making huge waves on our music scene since releasing her debut E.P. Alibi in 2017. Her sound is led by brave, bold, punk rebellion, punctuated with gutsy guitar riffs, pounding drums, and a whole rainbow of rhythms drawn from her multi-cult background of South Asian heritage, Trinidadian roots, plus London life over the last decade. This is music that stands up and demands to be heard, especially when it’s topped with her Pop-edged perfect vocals that sit deep within the mix. Though lyrics are not her starting point, they’re conscious & considered, from a mind brimming with intelligence and wit calling out racism, sexism, and a whole host of world inequalities. Ms. Mohammed doesn’t define herself as a singer/songwriter yet she handles song structure eloquently, and produces her own tracks, plus plays most of the instruments, roving through percussion, bass, and lead guitar. Despite not having any brown female musician role models when she was growing up, Ms.Mohammed has carved out her own path, strong, unique, and defiant - it’s likely she will be the one to fill that gap for future generations. Just four tracks on her Alibi E.P. tell us that when she comes to drop a full album, it will be a magnificent tour-de-force! and Find out more at msmohammed.com and see her live at Poplar Union on August 31st!

Gifted concert pianist & classical music star Ji Liu on this A World in London! Click here: https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/a- ... 268-ji-liu
Ji Liu’s professional foray into classical music performance began at the tender age of thirteen in Carnegie Hall, where he encountered his first and apparently last bout of stage fright. His rapid rise to fame is matched by his phenomenal talent and dynamic range on a Steinway, as colourful and varied as Renoir’s paint palette. When Ji arrived in New York in 2000 as a young boy from Shanghai he spoke almost no English but quickly grasped the notion that music was a powerful medium for communication, and as its master, he could connect continents. Now, after studying at The Royal Academy in London and basing himself in the UK’s capital, Ji is a calm, eloquent, and confident communicator, expressive verbally, musically, and continually – when he speaks, his fine fingers also play an imaginary keyboard! Ji’s latest album, Fire and Water, features piano solos derived from the works of early twentieth century composers, marking the centenary of Debussy’s death, and highlighting a golden era in music and painting which he resonates with. Ji Liu has empathy with the Impressionists, as well as the Romantics like Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff who sought inspiration from nature, and in it found solace from society. Hence, Fire And Water is also themed around the Chinese concept of Wu Xing - the balance found between the five elements of earth, wood, metal, water, and fire. Ji Liu’s presence in the classical music arena adds a sixth element – AIR - breathing fresh and loud.

Spiritual awakenings with singer/composer Kedar Sharma on this A World in London! Click here: https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/a- ... dar-sharma
Delhi-born, Kolkata-raised vocalist/guitarist, Kedar Sharma, has been at the heart of India’s vibrant Rock music scene for many years, but since moving to London ten years ago, he’s immersed himself in deep study at The Bhavan, the UK’s renowned centre of excellence for Indian Classical music. Kedar has just produced his first E.P. – Prathamang – which comes out on July 21st, and we take great pride at being the first radio show to air his new gift to the world. Prathamang means first limb, and it’s themed around an exploration of life, from birth to death, and beyond. Kedar’s powerful yet sensitive & versatile voice, merges beautifully with that of fellow Bhavan student Bilwa Iyer in a perfect union of Shakti-Shiv, and Kedar’s wonderful arrangements comprising his acoustic guitar, plus tabla rhythms by Dhanraj P. Pandey, are mixed & blended finely by producer Anaam. Prathamang is a blissful collection of east/west Rock limbs stretching out into Classical territory, so when the full body of Kedar’s musical imagination grows into an album, it’s going to be exceptionally brilliant!
