Queens of harmony – Marina Deligianni & Sofia Pechlivani on this festive A World in London! Click here: https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/a- ... -pechivani
The hectic pace of life in London means that Christmas never comes until something special zaps it into focus. Two musical magicians waved their eloquent wands on our last show of 2017, combining a glorious chorus of angels & sleigh bells into the ultimate Xmas cracker! Multi-instrumentalist/songwriter, Sofia Pechlivani and charismatic vocalist Marina Deligianni have outstanding individual attributes, but together, glitttering synergy. Marina is a chief contributor to the London Greek music scene, enhancing the Rebet Asker series at the Green Note in Camden & bands like Plastikes Karekles, with her magnetic & distinctive voice. She is a co-founder of the unique, annual Rebetiko Carnival, and exciting new Rebetiko Choir. But on Friday nights, at a restaurant in Finsbury Park, Marina & Sofia have merged as a perfectly blended woman-only duo in the ladies room as well as on stage! We brought them out of the ‘bathroom sessions’ and into our studio for a delicious seasonal gift to you!

The magnificent London Gypsy Orchestra on this festive A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... mber-2017/
Our Chanukah & Christmas special was lifted into outer-orbit by Balkanesque big band, the London Gypsy Orchestra! Nine members of this charity-based outfit squeezed themselves into our studio, along with their fine array of instruments ranging from a pocket trumpet to a mother-of-pearl inlaid accordion. Linguistic chameleons Sarah Montague and Agnes Branner led a bold & brassy vocal trek across Eastern Europe taking in gypsy classics from Hungary to Macedonia including a marvellous cover of Esma Redzepova’s ‘Caje Sukarije’. LGO has been on the road since 2005 when it was first founded by Magic Violin’s Gundula Gruen, and they’re still one of the most exciting and vibrant groups in our capital. Catch them on this AWIL – our last show of 2017 – and check out their brilliant new CD – ‘Gankino Goes To HoraWood’!

Ben Mandelson from Les Triaboliques on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2018/
The fabulous guitar trio, Les Triaboliques return to our capital’s live scene for a rare gig on January 19th at Rich Mix. Justin Adams, Lu Edmonds, and Ben Mandelson are the strummers in this cult band that formed in 2009, releasing their definitive, and only album, Rivermudtwilight to wide critical acclaim. On this AWIL, Ben Mandelson provides an insight into the careers of his comrades in lute, but also a reminder of his own staggering list of achievements spanning over 40 years in every aspect of the music industry. There’s been touring with Billy Bragg, Magazine, 3 Mustaphas 3, Yiddish Twist Orchestra, and the creation of pioneering label Globestyle Records. Ben excels in everything he does, whether it’s producing albums for Ladino goddess Yasmin Levy and Algerian piano legend Maurice El Médioni, or co-founding the essential annual world music expo Womex, but, he’s a humble guy that doesn’t ‘do’ social media and selflessly shares his wisdom to empower other artists – I’m one of them. First & foremost though, Ben is a passionate musician, and it’s in Les Triaboliques that he is matched with equally virtuosic peers. After a five year sabbatical, it’s darn good to have them back so book your ticket now! https://www.richmix.org.uk/events/music ... iaboliques

Folk music’s finest new young ‘fiddler on the roof’, James Patrick Gavin returns to this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2018/
2018 is set to be a prime year for terrific albums by London-based artists, and one of the gigs we’re most excited about is at The Union Chapel on February 5th. That’s the date when James Patrick Gavin will be launching ‘Chewing The Fat’, with some premier folk stars from our capital joining him on stage: Tad Sargent, Djukella Orchestra’s Jez Hellard, and Teyr’s Dominic Henderson on uilleann pipes & whistles, plus support from Tell Tale Tusk’s Fiona Fey. At AWIL we’ve been blessed with two exclusive live previews of James’ debut CD, and on this show his skills as an authentic & unique song-writer shine through, with emotive vocal contributions from his grandmother and father. ‘Chewing The Fat’ is family album of musical photographs that we are privileged to be invited to share, and as you turn the pages, you’ll find ballads and Irish reels, equally balanced in a swirling pool of sound. Stories of migration, the sorrows of leaving home, yet the bravery required in finding another, conversations between generations, reflecting across the sea, from Ireland to Islington, and back again. Always though, as the band strikes up to breakneck speed through a dazzling display of musicianship, each song ends on a high note whipping everyone into the joyful dance of life. James Patrick Gavin illuminates Irish and English folk traditions through his mastery of melody & fiddle , but his heart writes deeper, investing soul and complete ‘self’, into intimate portraits that fully celebrate why we’re all here, and ultimately, the gift of family. Book now and bring your dancing shoes for February 5th at London’s Union Chapel! www.jamespatrickgavin.com

Shamstep super-group 47 Soul on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2018/
It’s been just four short years since the guys from 47 Soul moved to London, stamping their electrofying sound on British soil, wowing muddy festival-goers from Glastonbury to WOMAD. On February 2nd they’ll launch their first full studio album, ‘Balfron Promise’, with an un-missable showcase at the Jazz Cafe. The quartet met in Jordan 2013, forming an alliance built on their individual music-making skills, and as four individual souls rooted in Palestine. As you’ll hear in this AWIL interview with Hamza (El Jehaz) and Ramzy (Z the People), interspersed with extracts from Balfron Promise, 47 Soul are powerful communicators, employing words & music perfectly in the art of expression. Their lyrics, sung in Arabic and English, are challenging and thought-provoking, exposing truths and correcting history, all framed within a turbo-charged, multi-layered concoction of Arabic riffs, vocal choruses, and blistering hip-hop beats. 47 Soul own this new genre Shamstep, and it’s expertly designed, providing a stepping stone into Middle Eastern sounds fused through urban London. This accessibility resonates with their overall message which is about connecting people through the common language of music and stitching fractured communities back together. The time has come for repair, not rage, and 47 Soul are the ideal diplomats to build bridges. Find out more and check dates for their UK tour at www.47soul.com

A double-bill of sensational bands on this A World in London - Bahla and TootArd! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2018/
Bahla opened our show with their wonderful atmospheric concoction of cinematic jazz weaved around Jewish folk music. This five-piece group was formed in London just two years ago by Venezuelan pianist Joseph Costi and guitarist Tal Janes. Along with Andrea Di Biase on double-bass, drummer Ben Brown, and the sublime vocals of Ines Loubet Franco from Portugal, they’ve just released their debut album, ‘Imprints’, and you can catch them on tour across the UK from February 2nd. Their London date will be at Pizza Express in Soho’s Dean Street on February 27th! www.bahla.co.uk
Next up on this AWIL were Hasan and Rami Nakhleh from TootArd, who’d just flown in from Paris and are set to play Rich Mix on February 1st! TootArd’s superb album ‘Laissez Passer’ has stirred up a whole heap of excitement on the international scene since it emerged last year. Their tracks marry rock guitar with classical Arabic sax, painting in Maqam riffs and Levant-tinted desert blues, filtered through deep dubby Reggae bass lines and compelling Maghreb rhythms. This charged and infectious winning musical formula of traditional meets urban has been handed down from their father and gleaned from YouTube, whilst their lyrical themes centre around the natural world, love, and travel. This latter point is a poignant one for TootArd having grown up in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. Their idyllic small village in the Majdal Shams mountains is constrained by borders yet inhabited by people restricted by their ID pass - Laissez Passer - leaving them effectively stateless & without a sense of belonging. But in TootArd’s case, their bold, unique, and inventive sounds qualify them as citizens of the world-class musician community, and fortunately for all of us, a musical passport to freedom. Trailblazing Night Czar, Amy Lamé, puts London back on top of the world, on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2018/
In 2016 two bold steps by new Mayor Sadiq Khan propelled London a giant leap forward - the launch of the Night Tube and appointment of a Night Czar. When Amy Lamé came into post, ours was the city that never wanted to sleep but was in danger of becoming a metropolitan dinosaur. Pubs, bars and clubs were rapidly vanishing, nocturnal key workers braved risky journeys home on dreaded night-buses, and London's night economy was unrecognised and undervalued. With a flash of brilliance and her infinite wealth of qualities, Amy was able to view London through fresh eyes pouring with unbridled enthusiasm. As a relative newcomer, she’d adopted London as her home in 1992 and went on to become club promoter, author, DJ, broadcaster, and grassroots activist, joining the Labour Party & Fabian Women. It's rare that we find fellow creatives at the heart of policy-making, or with any heart at all, but now at last, there's someone who is on the same page as the rest of us. Amy cares about the closure of music venues, the safety of women on public transport, and the questionable questions on the 696 form which have restricted many promoters for years, because, these have been her issues too. Amy, like Sadiq, comes from a working–class background and mixed cultural heritage. She empathises with ‘outsiders’, and revels in London’s diversity, seeing it as full of exciting possibility. Her vision involves inclusion, creative partnerships that galvanize people & communities, and she champions the amplification of non-Establishment voices. Whilst the costly mess of Brexit - dreamt up by divisive Bullingdon Club boys - drags on, dragging the UK’s reputation down across the globe, rest assured that our Night Czar is really a day and night STAR, passionately placing London back in its rightful place as the world’s leading capital. Legendary Punk global music pioneer, Aki Nawaz on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2018/
At AWIL, interviewing someone I’ve known for a long time is extra exciting because that’s when there’s a chance to really discover so much more about who they actually are and what makes them tick. Aki Nawaz lived up to all expectations with his fascinating history and inspirational travels in music, and also by dispelling many of those ridiculous myths about people of colour being one-dimensional & limited to a diet of ‘ethnic’. His story begins somewhere in Bradford, a boy growing up on Ritchie Blackmore’s Deep Purple guitar riffs, then becoming a huge punk rock fan soaking up the sparks and spit of the Sex Pistols in the 70s. Aki defied every convention that said the music business was not a suitable place for good Muslim Asians, and in fact did the exact opposite by joining notorious Northern band Southern Death Cult. As if that wasn’t haram enough, or could be passed off as a phase of misspent youth, he moved to London and took things a lot further! Together with Kath Cannoville, who shared Aki’s working class Yorkshire roots & visionary passion for music, he birthed one of the coolest ever record labels that would redefine British music history. Nation Records boldly rubbed shoulders with other uber-cool labels like Ninja Tune, Metalheadz, and Talking Loud, in what became a golden era of the ‘indies’, leading a Brit revolution of new musical trends: jungle, drum n’ bass, trip-hop, and Acid Jazz. Nation Records especially, gave an essential platform for artists rejected by major labels, and in doing so, they unleashed some of the hungriest, most talented bands working in the late 80’s and 90’s. Think Transglobal Underground, Loop Guru, TJ Rehmi, Joi, and Asian Dub Foundation just for starters. In every respect Nation became the launchpad for long-needed musical innovation, demanding space for a bubbling underground to burst overground, and setting the wheels in motion for a whole music scene to expand and evolve. Global fusion and Asian Underground exploded out of Nation via its white labels, ethos, clubnights and Global Sweatboxes at the Bass Clef, Subterranea, and The Astoria. Aki’s own band Fun-Da-Mental, embodied much of this energy, employing sufi chants and qawaali scatts, South African gospel harmonies, and uncompromising kick-ass attitude with Dave Watts & Aki head-banging the whole affair. Their lyrics were equally explosive, subversive, and challenging, calling out racism, and corporate capitalism, but sometimes settling into a spiritual charm and grappling with identity politics. Cool magazines like the Face and I.D. flocked to Nation’s rallying cry, as did an entire media circus worldwide, and, that’s where my story with Nation begins. Sometime in the late 80’s they were the first label to send me records which stirred up a radical new sound in my DJ sets and on my BBC show. We were often on tours together taking in Vienna, Ljubljana, Cologne, and one memorable trip to Oslo when Aki was stranded at the airport because he’d lost his passport whilst we (Sister India and Joi) all flew home. Over the years, on planes, in green rooms, and hotel lobbies, I drank and debated with a series of outstanding vocalists that fronted Fundamental – Inder Goldfinger, MC Mushtaq, Nadz (Scalper), Nawazish Ali Khan, and spent hours in the studio with Hustlers H.C. when they recorded ‘Big Trouble in Little Asia’. But most of all there were the restful times just chilling in the Nation Office with Kath, Aki, Rich, and Simon Underwood, drinking mugs of tea and contemplating what all this activity from within us, and around us actually meant? Kath and Aki often referred to the ‘Nation family’, and so it was for all of us musical misfits that sailed in the Nation mothership or because of her. The label was set up in 1987, preceding similar initiatives by at least six years so be wary of TV documentaries that claim to be definitive about British Asian music, when more often than not they re-write history, confound the truth, and add in characters that were never even there in those halcyon days. Aki Nawaz’s contribution to music worldwide has been immeasurable – as a pioneer, maverick label boss, A&R man, artist, producer, composer, and performer. He’s still here, as vibrant and punky as ever, relentlessly lighting up the globe – who knows which new next chapters in history he might write?

Genius lyrical master & Calypso monarch Alexander D. Great on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2018/
Everytime London’s premier Calypsonian returns to AWIL, it’s with gusts of fresh air and renewed creative energy. Alex is a prolific craftsman of words and one the most shrewd social commentators of our times, astutely and eloquently observing events both past and present and underlaying them with infectious Caribbean rhythms, that twin the soul of Trinidad with urban London. It’s hard to imagine anyone being even vaguely able to match his skills, but over the last year, his songwriting partnership with pandiva and fellow Trini Debra Romain has gone from strength to strength. This West London pair harmonise perfectly in every sense, bringing out the best in each other’s voices, lyrics, and vision. On this show you’ll hear their solo and collaborative songs about the Grenfell Tower tragedy, overlooked community champions, and the ongoing disease of colonial exploitation in countries like Haiti. There are many types of protest music, but Alex has turned it into an artform, wisely choosing his words tactically, strategically, and with finesse. Much has been made of Stormzy’s recent rant at the Brit Awards, but when it comes to the chess board of debating social injustice and oppression, Alexander D. Great is the undisputed grand master.
