Portobello Blues with magnificent musician Adam Blake on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... ober-2017/ On the corner of Portobello Market and Elgin Road, you’ll find Adam Blake busking Blues of every kind. The works of Blind Willie Johnson and Lightnin’ Hopkins are revived through Adam’s excellent voice and intricate guitar moves, transforming this trendy part of West London into some kind of Mississippi delta. He’s also collaborated with amazing peers like Natacha Atlas, Errol Linton, and Cornershop, enhancing their live sets & album recordings with a brimful of fret styles, on bass & sitar. On Facebook, Adam is a sensitive, thoughtful character that’s modest about his career history, and dazzling ability. But in our studio on A World in london, there was no place to hide his true & bountiful talents. Listen in for some fingerpickin’ good, and reach out to grab Adam’s ‘Portobello Blues’ album here: https://www.facebook.com/adam.blake.3192

Mixmaster DJ Vix on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... ober-2017/ All turntablists working with Bhangra music will have productions by DJ Vix in their library. He’s the most sought-after remixer on the British-Asian scene – the Desi equivalent of David Guetta - and has added essential beats & breaks to songs by vocal giants like Jay Sean, Sukshinder Shinda, and Jassi Sidhu. Vix is often out with his Dhol n Bass Roadshow, but I found him recently when we were both brought in to spin an ‘old skool’ set for the BBC Asian Network. On this AWIL catch Vix in the mix, live on the CDJs, and hear about his rise to fame from East London roots to international stardom! Find out more at www.djvix.uk.com

Award-winning rhythm master Pete Lockett on this A World in London! Click here: https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/a- ... te-lockett
Pete Lockett’s contribution to our soundscape is colossal, kick-started by an initial encounter with a rock kit in his home town of Portsmouth, before being smitten by the tabla grooves of Zakir Hussain at London’s Alexandra Palace. It wasn’t long before Pete began to perform on vast stages across the world himself, and with a global collection of drums! You’ll hear his beats in five James Bond films, numerous other Hollywood blockbusters, plus the works of Dido, Bjork, Peter Gabriel, Robert Plant, and The Verve. Like many of the very best musicians, Pete is a modest man that plays down his achievements but has so much to be proud of. Open and sharing, he gifts his skills through a tuition series on YouTube and his brilliant best selling percussion app for iDevices – DrumJam. There’s every reason to hear more about Pete Lockett on this AWIL, and via his website: www.petelockett.com

Ubiquitous musical treasure & vocal warrior, Cleveland Watkiss on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... ober-2017/
We caught up with Cleveland between some Sound Spas and his forthcoming date at The Vortex on Nov 6th as part of this year’s London International Arts Festival. Ever-evolving, it’s impossible to confine him to one genre, one era, or one skill, but suffice to say that the man that’s won the best vocalist Parliamentary Jazz Award 2017 is our man in the studio. A MOBO might be on its way too, and not before time. On this show you’ll get some sense of the journeys Cleveland has travelled in rhyme, as a virtuoso vocalist, composer, music educator, and actor. His early days in the 80’s with Lovers Rock queen Carroll Thompson, and The Jazz Warriors, followed by the heady 90’s drum n’ bass scene with Goldie & the Metalheadz crew in Hoxton’s Blue Note. There’s been collaborations with first-gen African greats like Sona Jobarteh, Tunde Jegede, and Kasse Mady too, but the collaborator list is endless and giant-filled so check the who’s who at www.clevelandwatkiss.co.uk Watch out for his new project Collective X, whose debut album cover has been designed by AWIL resident artist Alban Low. Our first live session with Cleveland on this AWIL left us with a lot of unfinished business, but rest assured that this conversation is to be resumed...

Iconic creative visionary Sheila Chandra on this A World in London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/awil ... a-chandra/
Interviews with Sheila Chandra are a rarity, so we were absolutely blessed to savour her eloquence and wisdom at AWIL.
With a career that spans 35 years as a pop star, global music pioneer, songwriter and innovator, we met Sheila in her current incarnation of author. Her new book ‘Organising for Creative People’ has filled a huge gap in the market − outlining how to set up the essential infrastructure any creative professional needs to thrive in their career − and recently topped the Foyles non-fiction chart. She is the perfect mentor, qualified as someone who knows the challenges and rewards of life in the creative lane first hand, in an industry that has changed beyond recognition across four decades.
Sheila began her long career in the arts as a child actress in the popular, but then controversial, after-school BBC TV series Grange Hill. But her ambition to become a singer took her into heady pop chart history worldwide, fronting the Indian fusion band Monsoon, and that glorious ground-breaking Top Ten hit ‘Ever So Lonely’ in 1982. She immediately became a role-model and flag-bearer for every South Asian kid that saw no reflection of themselves in the mainstream.
As a solo artist, Sheila went on to produce six ground-breaking vocal orientated albums on the tiny Indipop label and a best-selling trio of minimalist solo voice and drone albums for Peter Gabriel’s Real World Records, exploring the gateways between vocal techniques between vocal cultures from all over the world, and fusing them effortlessly in a single melodic phrase. She thrilled ‘live’ audiences as a lone figure seated quietly onstage while she explored the boundaries of what was possible with the voice.
As one of the few, and certainly the earliest of Asian artists to achieve mainstream success, Sheila became a brown stamp in a white world. A teenager when she made her song-writing debut (on her second solo album Quiet, comprised of 10 lyric-less tracks which explored the voice as an instrument) this elegantly sari-clad woman was an impossible-to-ignore, unconventional and un-stereotypical non-white presence in music. Defying expectations of what it meant to be young, female and Asian, without ever setting out to shock, she says that the most common phrase she heard at this stage of her career was an astonished ‘You can’t do that!’
The sheer artistry of her work forced audiences to move beyond their old connotations of music from the subcontinent as merely ‘exotic’, the soundtrack of the sixties, or the musical equivalent of ‘Fair Trade’ craft goods. Her music was unmistakably fine art. And behind this was a steely determination. Her pioneering work only became possible because she eschewed the mainstream record company route, managed herself, and cashed in her fame in exchange for musical freedom.
It was when Real World were putting out the ‘Moonsung’ retrospective of her work that I first interviewed Sheila, in 1999, and I remember feeling that I was in the presence of the most powerful woman I had ever met. Someone who knew exactly what she was doing, and why. She was filled with a sense of purpose, dedication, and complete clarity about her musical mission. Since then, she’s proved that adaptation and fluidity is eminently possible, and that skills can be transposed from one field to another, consistently finding a new voice. In Sheila’s case that voice is pure, crystal clear, and permanently relevant, be it on vinyl or paper –listen to it on this un-missable AWIL!

Gifted song-sculptress Namvula on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... mber-2017/
When we first met Namvula Rennie four years ago on AWIL she was beginning a musical voyage of discovery & passion that would reap critical acclaim for her debut album, ‘Shiwezwa’. This week we witnessed an artist who has spread her wings and emerged stronger and butterfly beautiful. For a second generation Zambian that couldn’t speak her grandmother’s native tongue Namvula has matured into an ambassador for language and philosophy from this relatively uncharted quarter of Africa, and she encompasses her Scottish roots and London life into an eloquent sequence of storytelling. Namvula is our very own Joni Mitchell, without the protest but with sensitivity, adding light, deft touches to her lyrical content to convey messages that are deeply moving – emotionally or physically. Her 2nd album shows an artist comfortable in her own skin, confident as a singer/songwriter, sparkling with peer musicians like Kadialy Kouyate on kora, and bearing the voices of women of our times – those who love, those who are impoverished, those who are mothers - as Namvula herself has now become for the first time. This means that a promo tour for ‘Quiet Revolutions’ is on hold till next year until sleep deprivation wears off, but when you hear extracts from Namvula’s marvellous and conscious album, plus her superb unplugged performance in our studio, you might ask yourself if any promo is even necessary. ‘Quiet Revolutions’ is out today – November 10th – on Bandcamp! Multi-faceted ‘Voice of Scotland’, Mary Ann Kennedy on this A World in London! Click here: https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/a- ... nn-kennedy Music fans will already be familiar with the broadcasting voice of Mary Ann Kennedy steering Roots music through BBC Scotland & Radio 3 with panache. We caught up with MAK in her musician persona as she was drawn away from her idyllic home near Ben Nevis down to Tuned In London’s HQ in smoggy Bermondsey for an intimate, sold-out gig last night. MAK is up for four MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards including Best Album Of The Year (An Dàn), Gaelic Singer of the Year, Community Project Of The Year (Tiree Songbook) and Media Category (Seirm). That album, An Dàn - a Gaelic word meaning 'fate' - is her premier solo outing showing off her talent for creating rich, lusciously layered melodies, combining her expertise on harp, keyboards, and guitar, topped with vocals of a higher & Highland nature. Another CD is on its way soon, offering more mountains of Gaelic goodness for a modern world, but meanwhile, hear MAK's beautiful songs on this AWIL - such as 'Seinn, Horo, Seinn' (Sing with one voice), a call to look forward to new ideas while honouring the past as well as the delightful love song 'Mise Fhuair'. 'Mise Fhuair' was penned by one of Gaeldom's most revered poets, Aonghas MacNeacail and translates as 'I Have Won The Apple'. Charismatic music maestro James Patrick Gavin on this A World in London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... mber-2017/
James Gavin and Tad Sargent share much common ground, from Irish roots to Islington’s Holloway Road, and previous appearances on AWIL, but most of all, their outstanding musicianship. It was pure joy to watch James Gavin’s finessed fiddle-playing working in tandem with Tad Sargent’s brilliant bouzouki-guitar in the studio! James has now embarked on his first solo adventure, producing a fantastic CD called Chewing the Fat which is scheduled for release on January 26th. It’s a concept album, centred around the life & times of his grandmother, Philomena, who lives on a remote Irish mountain and has plenty to say. Tracks on Chewing the Fat are equally conversational, taking unexpected twists and turns through weeping violin and furiously fast Irish reels. Our conversation during this AWIL was also unpredictable, covering debates about Folk music from across the British isles to the worrying loss of yet more grassroots music venues in London. ‘Tradition is tending the flame, not worshiping the ashes’(Gustav Mahler) - make your way over to James Patrick Gavin’s album launch at the Union Chapel on February 5th! jamespatrickgavin.com
