Today was stressy because the water board turned off our taps for six hours to change the street's lead pipes. For many people across the world, easy access to water is a luxury that we take for granted and I was humbled by our guest on this AWIL, when she spoke about her early years in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. A daily trek with pots & pans to collect water from the well was simply part of her routine, even post-apartheid, and, even in South Africa where enormous wealth has never been evenly distributed. Nevertheless, Noluyanda Mqulwana, ‘Nolly’ to friends, developed her passion for dance of all kinds, taking in local styles as well as the discipline of ballet. Her skills, talent, and determination soon propelled her across the globe, performing with dance companies from Switzerland to Singapore, and for the last three years she’s been touring with Winston Ruddle’s ‘Mother Africa’, his latest brainchild, descended from the Cirque Afrique project. Nolly plays many vital roles within the production, as dancer, singer, and choreographer. Mother Africa is part circus, part music-theatre, infused with glorious South African harmonies, a live band including kora, and a pan-African cast of acrobats, vocalists, and dancers, its theme centred around life-stories from Nolly’s hometown Khayelitsha. The water is back on! So catch the vibrant, visual, musical treat that is Mother Africa before March 12th at Holborn’s Peacock Theatre! Trail-blazing International Women on this A World In London IWD special! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... arch-2017/
We collected together some of the finest composer/musicians for this show, artists that have toured the globe, played the biggest stages, and created sparkling albums! They also just happen to be women. Jyotsna Srikanth, Sara McGuiness, and Kalia Lyraki also excel as innovators conjuring up new projects & festivals, and as educators inspiring the next generation of music-makers in Saharawi refugee camps to British/Greek/Cuban/Indian universities. Between them they have raised successful bands like Grupo Lokito, Kalia Lyraki Quartet, and Bangalore Dreams, led teams of merry men, and use their prowess and skills to navigate a way through an industry which is hardly female-friendly – see recent quotes from Madonna and Bjork! What does it take to be a musical Wonder-Woman? Listen here for unmissable insights and the brilliant music by Kalia, Sara, and Jyotsna!

Let Drum Beat on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... arch-2017/
We extended International Women’s Day into a Week by filling the Resonance FM studio with inspirational women yet again! Tuca Milan, Bea Shantifa, Marta Riccardi, and Alba Cabral brought their fabulous, ferocious, feel-good vibes onto this AWIL in the form of LET DRUM BEAT! The band members have all just returned from restorative trips to their countries of origin - Brazil, Italy, and Benin - refreshed and infused with new musical vigour. Their connection to home abroad and home in London is processed magnificently through their compositions, encompassing Afro-Brazilian percussion and dynamic rhythms, counterpointed with soft vocal harmonies. Their songs are sung in Portuguese, as well as the ‘lost’ language Tupi-Guarani, reviving the culture of indigenous tribes almost wiped out by years of colonization in Brazil. Let Drum Beat’s arsenal of amazing instruments tantilises another voyage of discovery through the arched bow of berimbau, kalimba thumb-piano, and an array of beads & goats nails(!) sounding like water-drops. With their mastery, or miss-tery, of these instruments, unique global vision, and Amazonian energy, Let Drum Beat collect & connect the world’s continents in the most colourful kaleidoscope of music! See them at Sofar Sounds on March 20th & at The Southbank Centre on May 5th! LET the rhythm pulse through your body.Take a DRUM of your choice. Create the BEAT and play to the world.

The Sound of Afro Soul by Kihaya Blues on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... arch-2017/
On the day we most needed some musical healing in London Town it arrived fortuitously in the form of Kyazi Lugangira, creator of Kihaya Blues Band. Kyazi sings of love and unity with global vision, through a rich, engaging voice powerful enough to soothe a thousand souls, and silence the constant scream of sirens we heard as the Emergency Services raced past our London Bridge studio to Westminster. Kyazi’s compositions emanate from his chosen instrument, guitar, which he only took up at the age of 27, leading him astray from a promising and lucrative career as a barrister. It’s career change that has been fully supported by his family in Tanzania upon realising the full extent of his talent and passion for music, his mother in fact, pointing out the potential of their melodic local language, Kihaya, as a perfect portal for his songs. March 22nd, 2017 will be remembered as the day when tragedy came back to our capital city and some people never returned home to their loved ones. At AWIL, we will also remember it as the day when Kyazi’s Afro SOUL fed ours. Take your hearts and minds to Rich Mix this Saturday, March 25th to see Kihaya Blues Band plus Zimbabwe’s Farai & The Forest Dawn.
Also on this AWIL, a brief rendezvous with the Southern Cone Quintet before their concerts at St. Ethelburga’s on Mar 25th and Omnibus Clapham March 26th.

London’s BEST new Balkans band, Raka, announced their arrival with a bang on THIS A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... pril-2017/ Raka was assembled by Ben Pitt less than a year ago, inspired by fellow band member Josh Middleton, of Don Kipper fame. Josh’s skilful and melodic accordion repertoire launched Ben on a journey of musical discovery from Bulgaria to Bosnia, taking his viola for a soaking in gypsy classics by legends like Ivo Papasov and Esma Redzepova. Raka’s sterling line-up of London musos includes ubiquitous multi-linguistic Slovak vocalist Lori Secanska, Namlo’s Gizem Altinordu on darbuka. percussionist Tim Karp, Lucy Tasker on clarinet, Oysland’s John Macnaughton on sax, violinist Matt Holborn, and Chris Traps on tuba. Together they’re the most thrilling, foot-stomping collective to emerge from our capital and you can see Raka on May 5th at Jamboree!

Afrikan Boy is set to drop the Mother of all Albums this summer! Hear excellent extracts from ‘Life in The West’ exclusively on THIS A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... pril-2017/ Afrikan Boy released his debut ‘ABCD’ IN 2014, so there’s three whole years of life, love, and lyrical inspiration poured into his new album, taking him beyond his origins as a key figure in London’s vibrant Grime scene and reaching back into his African roots. Life In the West also features Senegalese kora maestro Diabel Cissokho, and sonic sculptor Afrikan Eskimo who’s a perfect match for AB’s profound lyrical sculptures. Robbie on electric guitar adds an unconventional bite to their sound, but then AB is anything but conventional, forging his own unique and dynamic path through rap & riddim. Afrikan Boy speaks up for urban South London, refugee communities, and global issues, eloquently and charismatically voicing it all with sheer brilliance!. New-generation guardians of eastern Europe’s Klezmer soul – Oysland - return to A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... pril-2017/
When Oysland debuted on AWIL last October we knew great expectations about their second album were justified! That album - Vundervelt – is now ready for launch at Jamboree on April 29th and Oysland gave us an exclusive preview of it on this show! Vundervelt was swiftly recorded over an intense weekend in a Walthamstow ‘shed’, under the watchful & precise ears of London Klezmer Quartet’s Rupert Gillett. One of the best producers in our midst, Rupert recorded the entire 7-piece group playing together without separate takes or overdubs. Hence, Oysland’s skillful delivery of Yiddish folk & wedding dance has been retained along with the vibrant ‘live feel’ of their concerts. On a London scene brimming with superlative klezmatic bands, Vundervelt brightly reflects Oysland’s passion & perfection raising the bar to a new level of excellence! Eliane Correa and Manuela Panizzo on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... pril-2017/
A tornado of energy, passion, and infinite talent breezed into AWIL this week in the form of Eliane Correa! Pianist, composer, and musical director of numerous outstanding projects, Eliane has an enquiring and restless mind that challenges the status quo and seeks out the truth. She champions the unrepresented and digs out the undiscovered, surging the treasure found deep within Afro-Cuban roots and rhythms through her compositions. Piano may be her primary instrument given that she was drawn to it as a toddler, but equally remarkable is her sultry voice with raw gypsy power. For this session at AWIL, we had two Latin hearts in vocal harmony – Italian & Spanish – beating as one, as Manuela Panizzo joined Eliane in the studio. Their voices will pair again this Saturday at Rich Mix for La Linea Festival 2017, adding to a perfect line up that includes The London Lucumi Choir. Together they’ll also premiere a new single – ‘Love In the Ashes’ – raising much needed funds for domestic violence charities. Although she thrives in every setting, choirs make sense as Eliane naturally gravitates towards big collaborations, matching the enormity of her own talent and vision; thirty-one musicians from Havana feature on her album, ‘Rumba Con Flores’. When asked ‘’where is home?’’, Eliane replies ‘’neither London nor Havana’’ because she is a citizen of the world. For an artist of world-class calibre and infinite capability like Eliane, perhaps even the world is not enough! See her on April 29th at Rich Mix London! #EnElAire #Wara www.elianecorrea.com
