Creative composer and kora maestro Kadialy Kouyate on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... mber-2016/
We were totally mesmerised by Kadialy Kouyate in the AWIL studio, soothed by his smooth & perfect singing voice and stunned by his wizardry on the kora. Coming from one of the most distinguished griot families in Senegal, Kadialy’s musical education began during his toddler years alongside a whole heap of agricultural chores. His artful skills in music brought him to the UK over ten years ago and it’s London’s diverse community of musicians that have fed into Kadialy’s ongoing ‘sound archive’, laden with spiritual & humanitarian observations and experiences. He has worked with Baaba Maal, Mumford & Sons, The Royal Shakespeare Company, and many more. His wonderful second solo album, Na Kitabo, featuring members of his five-piece band, is a talking book of his latest collection of songs made over 2016, and Kadialy has played numerous roles in its production aside from being at the centre of its creative force. Hear Na Kitabo on this AWIL and see Kadialy on stage at The Green Note in Camden on January 6th! www.kadialykouyate.com www.focusorganization.com

The ARC Music record label looks back at forty years of global wanderings on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... mber-2016/
Somewhere in a little club in Hamburg circa 1976, a Bolivian band called Los Rupay played their first European gig. The promoter, a young guy called Horst Tubbesing marvelled at their pan pipes and charangos and wondered why they had no LPs on sale for the rapturous audience to buy? Horst immediately remedied the situation by forming ARC Music, initially selling dubplates from the back of his Citroen 2CV! Subsequently, since the 70s, no corner of the world has remained untouched by the hand of this brilliant, independent label, fuelled by passion for every kind of genre, and driven by expertise & dedication to reach the remotest musicians on Planet Earth. Listen to ARC’s PR guru, Angie Lemon, and A&R man, Diz Heller, on this AWIL, playing some of the choiciest tracks from the back-catalogue! Hear about the rewards they’ve encountered being part of ARC’s family-orientated team, now led by Horst’s daughter, Julia Beyer, and some of the challenges faced through four decades of continual change in an industry not for the faint-hearted. Plus, the ultimate challenge of AWIL’s annual festive quiz set by London Gypsy Orchestra’s Norman Drucker! See what 2017 holds for ARC’s 41st year on ARC music FB, www.arcmusic.co.uk Twitter:@ARCMusicProd

Jazz Improv & melodies from the Med by Stefanos Tsourelis Trio on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2017/
AWIL got off to a great start in 2017 with a formidable live session from bassist Dave Jones, percussionist Eric Ford, and Stefanos Tsourelis on oud & guitar! The trio was formed only recently in 2015 yet is already one of the most skilled & thrilling jazz-based outfits in our midst. Watching these three wise men of instrumental gifts is almost enough to make you forget the huffing & puffing of ‘that’ Trumpet across the Atlantic for a moment or two. They draw you into their rolling conversation of riffs and fills, questions and answers, solos and choruses, chattering, reflecting, and exclaiming along a musical route stretching from the Sahara to Thessaloniki and back to the UK. Stefanos Tsourelis Trio will release their debut album, ‘Native Speaker’ later this year, but you can see them live at Alban Low’s Art of Jazz exhibition this Friday, January 13th, in Riverhouse Barn, Walton-On-Thames, and on February 8th at The Bulls Head in Barnes! https://www.facebook.com/events/1810967729176690/ https://stefanostsourelis.com/

Phenomenal & gifted South Indian music vocalist Adesh Sundaresan on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2017/
On a freezing foggy day in London Town, we needed a voice that could melt our hearts and cut through ice. Fortunately, we found the right man for the job in Adesh Sundaresan! His sparkling personality and stunning vocals generated enough warmth in the Resonance studio to heat a thousand houses. This pitch-perfect, pure-toned 21 year old’s passion for Carnatic music was ignited by his grandmother when he was a toddler, and he now sings with the confidence and maturity of a much older maestro. These days, South Indian classical music remains a rigorous discipline yet is taught via Skype from Chennai to West London by Adesh’s guru Dr. Mala Swamy! Nevertheless, it remains the responsibility of the student to be willing, open, and dedicated, learning every raag, nuance, and ornamentation, to develop the skills required for perfect improvisation. Adesh radiates all these qualities in abundance & has natural raw talent which can’t be taught. He’s an eloquent communicator, both musically and verbally, and it’s a good bet that his bedside manner as a medical student at UCL is equally perfect. Physician plus musician, Adesh is poised to be a major new ambassador for Carnatic music in the UK and beyond, translating all its goodness & tradition with infectious enthusiasm to younger recruits and wider audiences. He’s part of a new initiative called Raga Room which kicks off on YouTube in March, featuring the nu-wave of young British Carnatic devotees, so look out for Adesh’s debut there on April 23rd!

Sublime and sensitive South Indian music vocals by Savita Sundaresan on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2017/
Performing at AWIL can be something of an occupational hazard. Gone are the days when it was just me and the musician/s in the studio. Now we have an entire team of production assistants, resident artist, and other ‘interested parties’. So for 19 year old Savita Sundaresan, our guest on Wednesday, her debut on British radio turned into a recital in front of a mini but largely appreciative audience. However, at times, some of AWIL crew are prone to becoming a little rowdy, especially the parental contingent. Savita explained her life to us – she’s an engineering student at Imperial College, a Bharatanatyam dancer, as well as an up-and-coming talent in the world of Carnatic music. Her distinguished music guru is Dr. Mala Swamy in Chennai, and Savita often wakes up at 5.30am to start her music practise before heading off to one of the best universities on the planet. In every sense, Savita is accomplished, learned, and joyful. She has performed on stages across India & the UK in front of the most critical and discerning pundits of South Indian classical tradition, yet nothing could have prepared her for AWIL... The trouble started after I said ‘You’re a model daughter. What more could your parents possibly expect from you?’ Then one of the crew piped up with ‘When are we going to get grandchildren?!’ Another shouted ‘clean your bedroom more often!!’ Someone at the back squealed ‘you don’t eat enough greens!!’. It was only after Savita began to sing, gliding effortlessly through multiple octaves, intricate raags and krithis, moving mountains with her magnificent voice, that the heckling was finally silenced, as the rabble retreated into blissful serenity. Hear Savita Sundaresan and her brother Adesh on THIS A World In London!

Sonic phonic duo Vocal Global on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2017/
Seeing is believing, which is why the blistering voice acrobatics of Noga Ritter and David X, combined as Vocal Global, really MUST be experienced live! Unless you witness them in action, it’s impossible to know which instruments are for real and which ones VC have perfectly replicated, tongue-twisting their way through trumpets, talking drums, and tablas. Beatboxer extraordinaire, David X, lays down the jaw-dropping & jaw-emanating rhythm section, transporting the duo through a nomadic journey of beats carved up with jazz and hip-hop. Noga’s rich and powerful voice, sprung from Middle Eastern roots, glides through continents, languages, and meaningful lyrical compositions highlighting global issues & personal stories. VC’s stunning artistry and dynamic dance through song pivots them as profound communicators across all platforms - in care homes with special needs children through their work with Live Music Now - or in clubs/festivals where their exhilarating Vocalstar Galactica performance thrills bedazzled & breathless audiences! Packets of throat lozenges lay scattered around the table in the SOAS studio last Wednesday, lying in wait for any unplanned or spontaneous coughing fit. Two of the Koral Society, were unwell with colds, as was the show host, while the third band member had wisely stayed away to avoid any passing affliction. The trio in question, not in quarantine, aired their excellent debut album, ‘Waters Wide’, for the first time on British radio. Recorded at Tigersonic Studios, it boasts a collaboration between 3 band leaders, distinguished in their own fields of singer/songwritership, Jazz, and Afro traditional; Caroline Trettine, Alison Rayner, and Mosi Conde (he who stayed away); whose musical worlds collided in London just recently, opening up new paths for creative possibilities. Guinea Conakry meets Stokey, in waves of kora, guitar, and Rayner’s double bass, sealed with the kiss of straight talking, colloquial lyrics from Caroline Trettine, embellished with Mandinka & French whisperings from Conde. As three women croaked their way through this A World In London, the calm, clear, talented voices on Waters Wide shone through evermore brightly. Grab Koral Society’s album in May but get to one of the gigs tantalisingly previewing it across the UK this month, including the London date at Walthamstow Folk Club on Feb 19! http://www.carolinetrettine.com/koral/

Legendary Japanese music-maker Joji Hirota on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2017/
If you’ve ever seen Joji Hirota’s thrilling performances with the London Taiko Drummers, you’ll know that his live sets are unforgettable! A blaze of blistering beats pounded on giant drums that leaves audiences breathless, and TONIGHT, you can experience Joji’s spectacular percussive frenzy at Club Inegales London! But Joji is not ‘just a drummer’. He’s a distinguished composer, producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist, with a career that spans over three decades, and sixteen sensational albums! Awards, accolades, and collaborations with the likes of Jah Wobble, London Metropolitan Orchestra, and Royal Shakespeare Company have happened along the way, and Joji is the man to credit for filling the void of mystery that surrounds Japanese music. He is its finest interpreter and dedicated ambassador. Our fantastic guests on this A World In London were Nepalese group Namlo & Iranian singer Ali Azimi, and both have concerts taking place soon in our capital city! Ali Azimi & The Need will perform at Under The Bridge on Feb 24th showcasing his new rock-orientated album ‘Till Glory Finds You’. Azimi has a multiple-personality voice which soars through deep & profound lyrics written in Farsi & English, that bypass all borders, and resonate with humankind. He has made London his home after Tehran since 2004, and has many parallels with Ganga Thapa, the inspirational leader of Namlo. Both are prolific songwriters, outstanding vocalists, and have a degree in the Sciences, yet beyond Silk Road roots, their music routes are contrasting. Ganga champions the traditional folk styles of Nepal, alluding to the mountainsides & landslides, highs, lows, and hardships of Himalaya life, referencing sherpas & mules en route. Since adopting London as his home in 2007, Ganga – like Ali – has formed a unique band here, and on this AWIL you’ll hear exclusive out-takes from their hotly anticipated debut album, ‘NAMLO’, with exquisite co-vocalist Shreya Rai, talented producer/composer Bishwo Shahi on guitar, and Robin Hemmings on double-bass. Namlo in name and NAMLO on album, launch at Rich Mix March 2nd! Also on this AWIL the debut CDs by Koral Society and Vocal Global! Click here! https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/a- ... -ali-azimi

Indian sitar star Baluji Shrivastav on this A World In London! Click: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... uary-2017/
Could 2017 be the pinnacle year for Baluji Shrivastav? Decades have passed since the talented boy from Uttar Pradesh arrived in London ready to share his musical gifts across the world. This Sunday he launches his Best Of.. CD via ARC Music, with an OBE added to his name & numerous credentials. Balu is also about to become the first ever artist-in-residence at Rich Mix with his Inner Visions training project. References to Stevie Wonder’s seminal album are potent, as a blindness has proved to be no obstacle for either of these music visionaries. Indeed, Balu has collaborated with Mr. Wonder, Massive Attack, Annie Lennox, Shakira, Boy George, and many more, but perhaps the most fruitful and consistent collaboration has been with his talented partner, singer Linda Shanovitch. Celebrity and honours aside, together they support up and coming musicians with sight impairments as well as other disabilities through the Baluji Music Foundation, creating essential opportunities & thrilling platforms for great music. One such protégé is Iranian vocalist Fereshteh Khosrujerdy who came to the UK just in order to be allowed to sing at all. You can hear her gorgeous vocals on this AWIL, dueting with Balu, in a glorious multi-lingual exchange of harmony. Fereshteh, and maybe her trusty guide dog Bruce, will be part of the Inner Vision Orchestra with Balu and eight other excellent musos at London's Rich Mix on February 26th, including tabla maestro Sanju Sahai. Wonderful to welcome back Bernard O’Neill to this A World In London! We last met in 2010 on a memorable bitter cold night at Bush House, when Bernard and Nick Dubulah shared music, tales, and food recipes from Damascus, connected with their superb Syriana project. That radio programme was also unforgettable because of other reasons: A World In London had just been given notice to quit by the BBC, the beautiful historic World Service building we were in had been sold off to create more luxury UNaffordable housing, and, Syria itself was on the brink of being reduced to rubble. Since that fateful and ominous AWIL, we’ve stayed in touch, yet I’ve always thought of Bernard as being simply a double-bass player. As we found out this Wednesday, he of course has many more strings to his bow, and came into the SOAS studio fully loaded with a new double CD - ‘Terraforming In Analogue Space’. Lovingly conceived, painstakingly pieced together by Bernard, Nick, and journalist Robin Denselow, the album absorbs fifteen years of IRL’s back catalogue, featuring originals and remixes by some outstanding global music shakers n’ movers. Think Tinariwen, Lo’Jo, and The Malawi Mouse Boys, just for starters, and then imagine remixes by Transglobal Underground, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, plus more, spread onto a two-disc beauty! In other good news brought by Bernard to this AWIL, Syriana have just been given the green light by Real World Records for a follow-up CD! The future looks bright - Listen here! https://soasradio.org/music/episodes/a- ... oneill-irl

‘Build bridges not walls’ was one of the key slogans to emerge after America’s recent presidential election. Composer Idan Raichel has long nurtured this philosophy since the release of his 2007 debut album, ‘Within My Walls’, forming creative partnerships with Palestinian musicians, global talent that includes Alicia Keys, Cape Verde's Mayra Andrade, Portugal’s Ana Moura, and Malian guitar royal Vieux Farka Toure. The London date in Idan’s current European tour sees a Hebrew–Farsi lyrical alliance with rising new star Golazin, who has flourished as a singer since adopting this city as her home eleven years ago. On stage tonight at 229 The Venue, Idan and Golazin will dot the 'i's of Israel and Iran with musical notes linking the two countries through melodic eyes. Peace and unity might seem like a cliched desire for music artists to achieve through music, but whilst divisive leaders govern the world stage, it’s absolutely necessary to orchestrate an alternative. See Idan and Golazin on the concert stage this evening at 229 Gt. Portland St.W1W - amongst their beautiful songs, you might just hear the sound of some walls come tumbling down.
