It can be daunting for a broadcaster to welcome back the same guests within just two months, after all, what else is there to talk about? But when you’re interviewing a New Yorker that has built her own kora and a musician that can tell you about her birthplace in Inner Mongolia, there’s fat chance of running out of things to ask. Moreover, as these two women cab their way around London transporting instruments the size of small sail boats, through a merry-go-round of gigs/rehearsals/this radio show, we become totally engaged in their voyage of self-discovery. As an embryonic duo formed at SOAS just this year, the pair are still navigating the tricky waters of the live circuit; learning about their sound – how best to mic it, the perfect reverb to enhance it, and the right venues that can accommodate it. Choosing the best photographers on a shoe-string budget, creating a social media presence, but most of all, finding new and fresh joys whilst composing music together. When 21 + 21 adds up to a magical combination of Chinese zheng & West African kora cultivated by a talented young pair called 42 Strings, we become their eager travel companions on an exhilarating journey. Hear a prelude of the tantalising concoction by Muqi Li & Althea Sullycole on this show before their concert at A World In London -Live at Southbank Centre on July 1st! Serenity through skill via kora to guitar with Derek Gripper on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/a-wo ... ondon-188/
Musical maestro Derek Gripper achieves the seemingly impossible by translating compositions written for 21 string harp to the mere 6 strings of his trusty guitar. His new album, ‘Libraries On Fire’, takes on a further challenge by featuring some classic kora duet pieces yet incredibly Derek replicates the beauty of these works on his solo instrument without overdubs or multi-tracking. Growing up in Cape Town surrounded by township and Creole sounds, it wasn’t a giant leap for classically trained Derek to forge musical taste buds 'from Led Zeppelin to Khaled to carnatic violin'. His Who's Who of inspirations includes most of the Malian korist & Griot greats like Toumani Diabate and Ballake Sissoko, but even stretches across continents to Calcutta taking in the ragas of Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya. Fresh from his second collaboration with legendary John Williams at Kings Place last week we caught Derek on AWIL just before he tours in Wales. Perhaps his Welsh language skills need improvement but a definitive & delightful master-class in guitar is more than a fair swap. So Derek won’t be performing in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch but you can see him on stage at Wyeside, Builth Wells June 9th and at Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan on June 10th! Beyond the bouzouki with Kourelou on this A World in London! Their name means patchwork in Greek and by stitching together a multi-coloured sonic quilt of luxurious musical fabrics from the Black Sea through Greece and into the Balkans, they’ll launch ‘Patchwork’, their debut album next week. Kourelou’s team of master craftsmen was formed right here in London using the finest musical threads of our city to embroider their rich tableaux of sounds. On this occasion we had four core members of the group at AWIL: guitarist & founder Pavlos Melas who’s just published an autobiography about rebetiko great Márkos Vamvakáris, Costas Kopanaris on cajon (I’ll explain more later), Nikos Kyrios on violin who is in an absolute league of his own, and then, a guy called.. er.. Al MacSween on piano. Spot the difference? Yes, Al is from Manchester not Mykonos, but has studied Maqams with Palestinian singer & recent AWIL guest Reem Kelani plus spent many of his toddler years playing in the puddles at Womad. Kourelou, made in Greece, Albania, or Manchester, but honed in London, is expandable into a fuller collective at any given time, and on June 14th they’ll also welcome clarinet virtuoso Manos Achalinotopoulos into their fold. But even with just four acoustic instruments in our studio, Kourelou produced such a massive foot-stomping frenzy that I got carried away and said something rather embarrassing about something between someone's legs. From A World In London Live at Rich Mix last year we know that Kourelou will have everyone on their feet so if you go to see them at The Forge on June 14 be sure to take your dancing shoes, but don’t mention the cajon! The unparalleled voice & vision of Dhafer Youssef on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/a-wo ... r-youssef/
It was such a huge honour to welcome Dhafer Youssef to AWIL this week. His twenty-five year career through ethno jazz & Sufi sounds has taken him all over the globe, performing, composing, and creating outstanding albums. During his childhood years by the sea in Téboulba, Dhafer built his own oud out of bits of boat wood and bicycle cable, whilst making do with the loan of a real guitar just once per month. This is an artist then that doesn’t take his talent for granted and as you begin to comprehend his journey from Tunisia to Vienna & Paris, you realise that Dhafer is a man that was born to sing, to create, and to carve out his own undeniable destiny as a world-class music-maker. Dhafer’s limitless voice is unboundaried by octaves or convention and is matched only by his panoramic vision and meticulously heart-crafted compositions. In his mini-symphonies you can hear Dhafer’s voice reaching dizzying heights till it soars out of space into an other-worldly universe. Only the best musicians are skilled enough to melt into his ethereal arrangements wrapped around mellifluous poetry, which is why you’ll find guys like Eivind Aarset on electric guitar and trumpeter Nils-Petter Molvaer on his 2013 CD ‘Birds Requiem’. Dhafer has worked with so many illustrious names but perhaps the best is yet to come when the results of his recent collaboration with Indian tabla guru Zakir Hussain and Turkish clarinet maestro Hüsnü Şenlendirici will be revealed in 2017. Meanwhile a different new album is on its way sooner, set for release this September on Sony’s OKeh label. Make a note of the title, ‘Diwan of Beauty and Odd’ as it’s one that simply MUST be added to your record collection! More information: http://www.dhaferyoussef.com

Diabel Cissokho is back in LondonTown preparing to launch his superb new album ‘Tambacounda Express’ at Rich Mix on June 29th!
Although he travels frequently between Dakar, Morocco, and Switzerland, London is his second home, 'music is to share' and that's precisely what he's dedicated to doing.
Through our exclusive preview of his CD on this AWIL we hear about Tambacounda itself, Diabel’s birthplace, which is situated on the cusp of Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, and Gambia. At this busy transport & cultural hub, Diabel used to play by the railway tracks during breaks from his musical & ceremonial duties as a young griot. In the past griot families were not always held in high regard and were often dismissed as low-class wandering minstrels. That's all changed now and within his ultra-skilled family Diabel was chosen as his father’s korist protégé - a big responsibility and huge honour - one that he takes seriously. Diabel is refreshingly honest and this translates into his compositions and warming voice of purity. He writes about REAL life and is most inspired by the new experiences that travel brings to him. Other people learn about music and study it. In Diabel’s case it's ingrained and intrinsic, as if, the music actually learns from him. Book your ticket now for Rich Mix on June 29th and get onboard the Tambacounda Express!! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... june-2016/

Masters of melody, Lambrego, returned to A World In London with their blissful Brazilian songs! At Lambrego’s core is the hugely talented husband/wife team, Fernando De Morais Machado & Hannah Dunster, who melt Brazilian folk & classical flute with lyrics inspired by landscape, literature, love and humanity. When they sing you feel summer, somewhere between Sao Paulo and Eastbourne, with the warmest sun, bluest sea, and purest sand. As Lambrego’s sound & sensibility is so warm & inviting, occasionally other musical luminaries join the party of perfect song-writing and you can see them during the current UK tour. Look out for the brilliant Alba Cabral (Let Drum Beat/ Pé de Jurema), or classically-trained chaos-mongers iYatra Quartet on some dates, plus, the intoxicating voice of Sao Paolo’s Beatriz Tomaz who enhanced Lambrego’s exquisite harmonies on this AWIL! Behind the Clouds There’s The Sun, with Branco Stoysin on A World In London 87!
London-based composer/musician Branco Stoysin first picked up a guitar as a young teenager in his Sun-baked home town of Novi Sad, Serbia. His early influences were US rock groups and local Slavic folk music, and he went on to compose, draw, and write becoming an all-round renaissance man. As a self-taught guitarist uncluttered by tuition or convention, his compositions flow with natural inspiration & creativity, birdsong & Sunbeams, rivers & valleys, and the chorus of tears & laughter. These are painted on a superb series of CDs, produced in an equally organic way, steering clear of digital overload and remaining faithful to perfect musicianship recorded with the analogue warmth of reel-to-reel tape. Hence, Branco’s albums are filled with spellbinding and breathtaking beauty, crafted by a visionary artist that acknowledges and celebrates the natural but electric world around us which we often take for granted. Electricity is another thing we perhaps take for granted and in Branco’s latest book he pays tribute to its inventor born 160 years ago, fellow Serbian Nikola Tesla. In the current climate of uncertainty and division in the United Kingdom we could do well to learn the lessons of history and when I ask Branco why he left his idyllic home in what is now referred to as ‘Former Yugoslavia’, he has some stark answers. His was a country where neighbours lived peacefully side-by-side for decades until the 90s when they became enemies and ripped their own nation apart. In his music you can hear the range of emotions that emerged through that experience, yet always the Sun too. Because as Branco says, ‘behind the cloud there is always the Sun. You just have to look for it’.
Click here to listen to Branco on AWIL/CC 87: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... june-2016/
Branco will be launching his new music book with a solo-guitar concert titled "From Serbia With Love" (not a part of James Bond series :>), at prestigious Dillington Classical Guitar Festival, in beautiful Somerset, on the 4th of August, joined by the festival director Peter Rueffer on two tunes at the end, and the following day will also perform "So Lovely" tune, written for 8 guitars, with an entire classical guitar orchestra. When I started learning guitar, Branco was the course tutor at the starters' class at Goldsmiths College. I always felt his talent was frittered on us concrete-fingered beginners. He is a great guitarist and encouraging teacher. And I'm still learning, as one should.

Jaakko Laitinen nipped over to A World In London from Helsinki with an exclusive copy of his new single Naamioleikki! The charismatic band leader of Väärä Raha has been in our capital for the last week playing to rapturous audiences at Rich Mix & across the city, spreading his musical menu of Lapland folk, tinged with Russian, Balkan, and Middle Eastern vibes. I first met Jaakko in 2011 when we were both performing in sub-zero temperatures at Tallinn Music Week. We’ve stayed in touch ever since and along the way Jaakko has produced three wonderful albums, with a fourth due later this year. Together with Väärä Raha, Jaakko is a seasoned traveller, and their infectious blend of vox, accordion, trumpet, bouzouki and double bass has taken them to many far-flung corners of the globe, including Kazakhstan and Turkey. Surprisingly this was their first trip to London, but it certainly won’t be their last! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/a-wo ... aara-raha/ More info: www.mrjaakko.com
