Mermaids, bogeymen, and ravishing folk songs from Ranagri on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... pril-2016/
It's not just the stories that Ranagri tell, but the way they tell them. Tales of life, where mermaids mingle with bogeymen, hares and horses, set in the most fluid of folk songs. Ranagri’s four virtuosic musos collect their stories on tour through Asia, Africa & Europe, plus on Sunday afternoon walks by the Thames. Along the way, 1st & 2nd generation Irish folk as well as non-Irish wannabees are gathered too, enchanted by an intoxicating narrative embellished with flutes, penny whistles, bodhrans, guitars & electric harps. Ranagri’s new album is set for a September release - hear an exclusive preview of it right here on this AWIL! http://www.ranagri.com/

Nepalese folk songs from Night band on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/awil-180/
Thanks to the Making Tracks tour series, audiences throughout the UK have had the rare opportunity to enjoy a group from Kathmandu. Night come equipped with an assortment of instruments that have long disappeared out-of-fashion, championing the musical heritage of their country & revitalising it for the 21st century. However, all is not well in the trekkers’ paradise regarded as the gateway to the world’s most desirable peak. Mt. Everest’s locals are still feeling the effects of last year’s devastating earthquake, other natural disasters, plus the ongoing factors of poverty and corruption. Night’s lyrics offer an insight into Nepal beyond the rose-tinted version, raising questions that need to be asked. They also write and sing about the joys of life - weddings, parties, and simple pleasures, including Nepalese New Year which is celebrated today! Delve into the real Nepal, by Night, on stage at Rich Mix London Sunday April 17th! More info & UK dates: www.makingtrackslive.org.uk/

More music & tales from Afghanistan on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/awil-181/
Eminent ethnomusicologists Veronica Doubleday & John Baily returned to AWIL this week with their potent & hypnotic songs from Herat. This ubiquitous duo are accomplished creative talents beyond research & academia, in photography, film-making, miniature painting, embroidery, and book writing. Their infinite ability to convey the very essence of Afghanistan and its best features, is utterly seductive through the anecdotes they share and the irresistible beauty of the music they make. When John strikes up the sympathetic strings of the rubab, the commanding presence of this resonant Afghan lute that captured their hearts back in 1973, is felt instantly. As Veronica adds her beautiful, lilting vocals plus some deft touches on the daireh frame drum, it’s impossible not to be intrigued & smitten by Afghan culture in the way they were almost 50 years ago. See them in concert tonight, April 23rd – aptly – at St Ethelburga’s London Centre for Peace & Reconciliation, with a cinematic warm–up act featuring the young students from the Afghanistan National Institute of Music, in John’s 2011 film, Return of the Nightingales!

Lush strings & wonderful new Tango interpretations by London Tango Orchestra on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... pril-2016/ Classically trained violinist Caroline Pearsall created London Tango Orchestra in 2009 filling a much needed gap in the capital’s music landscape. After much searching and sourcing she now boasts the finest team of UK-grown and Argentine musicians led by a glorious string section, enhanced by piano & bandoneon, and topped with rich, evocative, and velvety vocals from Guillermo Rozenthuler. The orchestra currently stands at eight members but could easily swell into symphonic proportions at any time! Classic songs by legendary composers like Astor Piazzolla are lovingly re-arranged and delivered with expressive empathy and respect, bringing the tango genre to new and lusty audiences. Find LTO on stage on April 30th at Corrientes Tango Club in Chalk Farm, London, and grab their superb debut album ‘Primeros Pasos’ now! www.thelondontangoorchestra.com

The magical voices & harmonies of The London Lucumi Choir on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/awil-182/
Daniela De Armas, founder of The London Lucumi choir, nipped over to AWIL this week alongside Mish Aminoff. Both songstresses come from mixed heritage backgrounds, alluding to the eclectic and open nature of the choir itself. Created in 2006, LLC is about 25 members strong and they’re renowned for their Orisha/Yoruba repertoire often set to pulsating Afro-Cuban rhythms. On this occasion our focus was their wonderful collection of soothing lullabies including a perfect rendition of Hushabye Mountain, originally written for the film Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Remember Dick Van Dyke singing it to his children? Daniela’s three year old granddaughter Naila is one lucky gal as the entire CD ‘Lullaby For Naila’ is dedicated to her. No doubt she’ll be joining the ranks soon, but first, make sure you catch the London Lucumi Choir right here in our capital city at Rich Mix on Thursday May 5th, accompanied by an equally amazing line-up of gifted special guests like Reem Kelani, Juwon Ogungbe, Sarah-Jane Lewis,Juanita Euka, Sonia Sonayon, Michael Mercer Rosselson, Nana Clara Aldrin-Quaye, Lilli Elina, Davinia Baño, Jackson Scott, Tess Hirst, and Gerardo De Armas Sarria.

The most wonderful tango-esque trio in our capital - 3 Argentinas - are live on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... -may-2016/
Over ten years, the paths of Adelaida Monguillot, Eloisa Di Giacomo, and Milena Ariola have crossed numerous times from Córdoba to Borough High Street but serendipity and a shared passion for music finally drew them together as a trio in 2011. The three fit together like pieces of a musical jigsaw puzzle, with each member playing their essential, skilful part. Ade pens the poetic libretto, classical pianist Eloisa leads on composition, and Milena’s sultry voice reveals a multitude of influences drawn from her rock chick era & latex-clad punk past. Collectively, the 3Argentinas also share bundles of genuine warmth and this blisters through into their heart-melting songs concocted from tango, jazz, pop and rock. A follow-up to their gorgeous 2013 debut album, La Estrella, is being the road tested in front of audiences now. Hear an exclusive preview of it right here on this AWIL!

Cuban guitar maestros Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas & Eduardo Martin on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... -may-2016/
When you meet a virtuosic musician like Ahmed Dickinson Cardenas it’s hard to believe that even he holds someone else in higher esteem. That accolade belongs to composer/guitarist Eduardo Martin who has been London-based Ahmed’s tutor in Havana for sixteen years. It’s just now that Ahmed’s long-term ambition to share a platform with his respected hero is being fully realised, as guru and protégé come together on ‘The Bridge’ - Ahmed’s sixth album which features the gifted pair’s dazzling fretwork through Eduardo Martin’s technically challenging yet beautiful compositions. The album title alludes to the connecting of generations, cultures, and of course the essential meeting point of strings and sound board on the guitar itself. Unsurprisingly, watching these two masters at work is a cosmic experience and you can see them on stage at London Guitar Studio this Friday May 13th in Duke St. before they embark on their European tour! http://www.ahmeddickinson.com/

Eclectic musical wizardry by Oxford’s Brickwork Lizards on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... -may-2016/ Eight-piece band, the Brickwork Lizards, are a motley crew of mixed heritages which beam through their borderless song sheet. Scots, Egyptian, and Irish roots all find their way into a repertoire which encompasses Rai, rap, Jazz, and Ottoman classics, spearheaded by the sweetest vocals from Maqam’s Tarik Beshir and an MC called Tom O’Hawk (yes, really)! The sense of excitement in their performance is enhanced by the way the band deftly weaves through Arabic & western scales, swift tempo changes & key transpositions. It could all go badly wrong at any moment in the hands of lesser musicians but instead goes swimmingly well, spiralling dangerously back into control. Even whilst deciding on their playlist for the show a minute before take-off, the Lizards proved to be living on a knife’s edge and could easily rival any of Oxford’s prime debating societies. And it’s exactly there in their home city amongst the gleaming spires, near the River Cherwell that the Brickwork Lizards will test the waters with their follow-up album to ‘Zaman’ on June 30th at The Bullingdon. Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/Resonance/a-wo ... -may-2016/ Taking their name from the 3-string, snake-skin Sanshin lute London Okinawa Sanshinkai play traditional music from Okinawa, the Pacific islands 640km south of Japan. Okinawa is famed for its beauty, a remote paradise which also boasts the highest number of centenarians in the world! Folk music here is still very much alive and taught in schools though it rubs shoulders with a foreign invasion of American pop thanks to the US military base stationed there since WWII. London Okinawa Sanshinkai formed in London a few years ago at SOAS and run weekly workshops for aficionados of Japanese music. Join Mina, Minami, Mark, and Yuiko from LOS on this A World In London and see them on stage in Spitalfields on June 25th at Okinawa Day! https://sites.google.com/site/londonsanshin http://www.facebook.com/londonokinawasanshinkai

Distinctive and evocative singer-songwriter Reem Kelani on this A World In London! Click here: https://www.mixcloud.com/SOASradio/a-wo ... ondon-186/
Much to our joy, Reem Kelani has just released her first new album after ten years. Live At The Tabernacle is the superb successor to her 2006 debut, Sprinting Gazelle, recorded at the prime Notting Hill venue in 2012, and translating Reem’s powerhouse stage presence to CD . Each song is sung with her entire body, from the tips of her toes through to her lips. The depth of tones in her voice echo the depth of feelings submerged in lyrics drawn from the Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan & Palestine. Profoundly versatile as a singer, Reem sprints (gazelle-like) across a range of emotions employing her raw edged powers in protest songs and sweet soothing vocals for the lullabies. Only the finest musicians are qualified to partake in the highly-skilled game of Arabic call & response, and Jazz improvisation, so Live At the Tabernacle also features artists like oud maestro Tamer Abu Ghazaleh and pianist Bruno Heinen. Reem is a natural & driven communicator, both in song & conversation. She comes loaded with worldly wisdom, a wealth of anecdotes from her global travels as a human rights champion, performer & broadcaster, and she brims with indefatigable energy and an invincible memory! As Reem’s repertoire pangs at our conscience we receive an essential reminder that 70 years on after the Second World War, 85% of Palestinians are still stateless, dispersed, or ghettoed in occupied territories. Plus, a timely account of what it truly means to be exiled from one’s homeland, and the lessons of history from which mankind never seems to learn.
See Reem Kelani in concert this Saturday May 28th at Rough Trade in Portobello Road and find out more about her music from www.reemkelani.com
