Those 80s NME cassettes really opened my ears to soul, jazz, blues, reggae, African, Latin ...

At a Darbucka event a couple of years back, I went over to where Charlie was sitting, to say my hellos & he introduced me to Neil Spencer, former editor of the NME. I spluttered something about how he, along with Charlie, had introduced me to so much of the music I love (I may even have said something along the lines of "you're why I'm doing what I'm doing today!"). to his eternal credit, he didn't back away nervously looking for security, but rather thanked me & said something like "We certainly messed with some heads back then Jamie!"

I had mine stolen, but do have a copy of it, I'd love to get an original again. I also have it on the reissiue CD albeit the track listing is slightly different. Totally agree with Jamie on the NME cassettes. They were such a great introduction to so many types of music, and also made me interested in old music. Previously I was only interested in what was modern. I started to seek out releases on Charly and subsequently Ace.

Wouldn't it be great if you could buy compilations that good today? Its so difficult to find any that both match the quality and have tracks that are all new to you.

Neil Spencer's a good guy. I once rather rudely (and not entirely soberly) accused him of being responsible for unleashing the forces that killed off the kind of music journalism that I loved. He just grinned and said that if I was referring to his sacking both Tony Parsons AND Julie Burchill then he was guilty as charged.

BRILLIANT. Thanks Rob. I don't know all these cassettes but The Tape with No Name and The World at One were part of my staple diet for years, and naturally I recommend them. I have been careless in keeping things over the years, especially tapes, but some wonderful soul from this parish made me copies that I do still play today.

I had every single one of those cassettes - note past tense Our house is now upside down and I've only found two - What's Happenin' Stateside & Bush Fire. I crawled into a dark recess in the loft with a torch and behind the large bag with the Christmas decorations was a black vinyl cassette case (briefcase size) - I know you can all understand the trepidation I had as I slowly opened it - it was full of cassettes - all my wife's. Apart from one of mine - Nahawa Doumbia. Oh well, win one, lose thirty five.
