This is the sixth of our bi-monthly round-ups of world music hits from the last thirty years, and if you could have questioned the ‘hit’ qualifications of some previous entries, this week’s show has at least three bona fide smashes. Some may argue if they are proper world music records, to which I have no answer, only that they felt like they were at the time.

Deep Forest as a deliberately anonymous project comprising two Frenchmen, Michel Sanchez and Eric Mouquet, who placed vocals sampled from recordings of Pygmies in the Solomon Islands over programmed drums. It was as synthetic as music ever got, but those melodies were undeniably haunting and slid under your skin no matter how hard you resisted.

Neneh Cherry

Some people were horrified by the apparently similar production methods on ‘Seven Seconds’ by Youssou N’Dour and Neneh Charry, but it always sounded like a great pop record to me. Although it earned plenty of money for all concerned, the Senegalese singer’s career was blown off course and in some ways he never recovered. Even though she was a more natural hit-maker, Neneh didn’t find it any easier to follow up. Production was by her husband, Cameron McVey, for whom it also turned out to be a career pinnacle.

Sekouba Bambino

I must own up that Sekouba Bambino’s revival of James Brown’s ‘It’s a Man’s Man’s World’ was not a hit anywhere, so far as I know, but it always sounded as if it should have been, and aroused fascination whenever it was played on Radio London (not just by me).

Mory Kante

‘Yeke Yeke’ by Mory Kante was probably the biggest hit single by an African singer in the 1980s, topping the chart not only in France but Germany too. The UK was palmed off with a horrible so-called ‘Acid’ remix, which removed all trace of Mory’s kora playing. The producer was a Brit, Nick Patrick, who also worked with Rachid Taha around the same time (or rather, with Rachid’s first group Carte de Sejour).

Hi Charlie,

many thanks for the last selection, indeed I wonder very much how you come to these wonderful songs. I was moved by "It's a Man's Man's World"by Sekouba Bambino and "Yeke Yeke"by Mory Kante.

We need more from Rwanda and the great lakes region in Africa.

Greetings, I just wanted to let you know that I enjoy this show very much. I normally listen on Sunday evenings, just as I'm wrapping up my weekend and getting ready for the work week. Keep up the great work. BTW, I really enjoyed your selection of "It's a Man's Man's World" by Sikouba Bambino, so much so that I went online, found the track, downloaded it, and it's now happily residing on my computer (and soon my mp3 player).

Is there any chance this show could be expanded?

Hi Charlie

Thanks for last night's programme - a pleasure as usual.

I always go to sleep with Radio 4 playing quietly by my bed. I love listening to your programme as I drift between heaven and earth, in that lovely semi-awake state.

Your music choices transport you across the globe and across the time zones, one minute Paris, the next the Yemen.

Keep up the good work.
Nick
