John Peel and Madilu System

Being frustrated at not being able to log on the World Service programme (at the time) I clicked on the second half of John Peel's Glastonbury programme from 1994, rebroadcast on 6 Music over the weekend. He played a track by Madilu System. JP was always ahead of everyone. I only recall first hearing Madilu System from recently played tracks on World on 3/Sound of the World.

As well as the great Peel, I'm sure Andy Kershaw would also have been playing that Stern's album back then too, as I did on my BBC World Service show that spanned the decade before Charlie's started - we also had Ya Jean from it on our fRoots 3 covermount CD in summer 1994. Peel was certainly always on the ball, but also there was much more of a symbiosis between maverick radio and specialist press in those days, and live promoters too: what Charlie later tagged "world of mouth". I regret the fact that this has been fairly blasted away by everybody drowning in too much information in general, and the muzik-bizification of world music in particular.

I don't have the playlists from back then but I used to assist with a BBC Radio Stoke programme ' Legendary Lonnie's Sunday Best ' Sterns sent us their 1994 Madilu System release ' Sans Commentaire' On Lonnie's weekend lunch time programme a tune from that cd may very well have been followed by an Arthur Askey single ...

And yes, AK certainly did play the record at the time ( Madilu, not Arthur )

Thanks for this.
I think in 1994, I wasn't able to give music my full attention and didn't have the money either. Sorry I missed the other programmes.

However, I recently went to an art installation at the local arts centre - 'My Secret Heart' - film and music. The music was by Mira Calix (based on Alleghri). When I looked her up , I find she'd done a Peel session in 2000. http://www.miracalix.com/what1.htm
