RocksBackPages asked if I had any interview cassettes from the time when I was a journalist, especially when I was researching the book about Atlantic, Making Tracks, in 1971.
I was ridiculously unconcerned with the audio quality of the tapes in those days, just set the cassette recorder somewhere between myself and the interviewee, hoping it would not make them feel self-conscious.
I handed the tapes over with little expectation that much could be made of them.
But Mark Pringle has done a very nice job of cleaning up this long interview with the late Tom Dowd, engineer at Atlantic from 1953 through to the seventies, from Shake Rattle & Roll to Derek and the Dominoes, via Ray Charles, The Coasters, Otis and Aretha.
