Melody Maker jazz cartoonist

Postby Hugh Weldon » Thu Oct 22, 2009 10:46 pm

Can someone put me out of my misery and remind me of the name of the chap who used to do the cartoons on the Melody Maker jazz pages - Mal someone-or-other?

They were usually clever and often quite witty - I recall one accompanying a review of an Evan Parker - Paul Lytton duo free jazz/noise group LP with Parker playing a drainpipe. I used to cut them out and keep them for a while but of course they've long disappeared.

In an idle moment the other day I felt like doing a search to see if there were any on the net - but couldn't remember the guy's name. He's dead now I think, the last thing I remember reading about him was his obituary, some years ago.

Mal Dean, maybe?

A very amusing guy who I once met propping up the bar of the 100 Club!

Yep Alan, pretty sure you're right there, many thanks.

If I can find any examples of his stuff I'll post them here.

He provided the artwork for Pete Brown's LP sleeves I think.

Mal also did work for International Times and I think the event at the 100 was some kind of fund raiser for them. Another attendee was a mutual friend of Charlie and I, Wynford Hicks. Wynford was having an intense conversation with the guy next to Mal Dean and later I jokingly asked Wynford who he had been giving ear ache to he replied,“Ralph Steadmanâ€

One to look out for:

Not available via www.abebooks.co.uk. One on amazon, the usual silly price.

Now that you've reminded me of his name, I've done a bit of searching but the only example of an MM cartoon I could come up with this one.

Couldn't separate it from the one on the right unfortunately which is clearly not a jazz cartoon and is probably Clint Eastwood (?).

It's fairly obviously Sidney Bechet on the left, but I'm not sure what he's got on the end of his baguette!

Looking at it again it appears a Frenchman has hung up his beret there.

Typical daft/surreal Mal Dean idea.
