Remind me. Which Kurdish singers? Do they include?:-

I recently posted a link for 'Helin' to the Forum - Judith seemed to like it! The music is quite haunting.

Others include Ferhat Tunç & Ahmet Kaya. Ferhat Tunç has the most incredible, lilting voice - Ahmet Kaya very well known in Turkey, though later went to live in France (where I believe he sadly died at quite a young age) though was something of a rebel at times - his songs and music are very different to the norm - I'm sure it wouldn't be difficult to access a lot of his stuff.

Anyway - I know how much you love Aynur - she also has the most amazing voice - I enjoyed the recent programmes from Istanbul where you included her songs. Thanks once again in anticipation Charlie.

I have found the above - not sure if it will work, but it's another beautiful song.

There are a couple of tracks on this (patchy) album by Fate that outdo even Aynur. Incredibly powerful hair-raising stuff at times. Available from Tulumba.

And this is the 'Helin' one again - it's sung in Kurdish.

If it doesn't work - my earlier post contains the link which will!

the patchiness is partly a result of a heavy handed production on many tracks. The drums in places sound synthetic, and there are some string or keyboard washes. The great tracks don't have this, and have a natural, unforced sound.

props to Philellinas for discovering this one - Fate is an amazing singer.

Sounds great Chris but unfortunately we are denied access to YouTube at present in Turkey! I'll try and access another way today at some point. Hope you enjoyed my other links - I think the video clip by Ferhat Tunç, featuring the incredible 'saz' playing is very moving.

I've just listened to her on Dailymotion - a beautiful voice - I had never heard of her before - thanks to you and Philellinas for the introduction.

Hi kastamonu, very glad you've found some clips on Dailymotion & enjoyed them.
I've asked a friend in Turkey about YouTube and here is his reply:
youtube is usually banned by public prosecutors because someone somewhere is showing some pro PKK or anti-turkish video, of course this is completely absurd and against any notion of free speech and appropriate response

it's not hard to get around using a foreign DNS service (there are several) but it's a hassle and presumably a lot of people dont bother

lately things may be getting better - today it's not banned for example

Many thanx Chris - must say I've never had any luck with it over the past few months. My partner (Kurdish) is in the Turkish Army at present, so maybe less said the better(!) but I had heard it was something to do with comments made in Greece?? It does all seem rather ridiculous though.
All the best.
