Bobby Womack

Postby Dayna » Mon Jun 29, 2009 1:37 pm

I've heard one of Bobby Womack's songs called There's A Riot Going On. I learned fairly recently Bobby Womack was from Cleveland and he's also going to work with Gorillaz now. That sounds interesting.

Dayna, Bobby Womack's early band was the Valentinos. He and his sister in law Shirley wrote "It's All Over Now" which the Stones then recorded. I've posted this on the Youtube Recommendations. Much later he recorded the magnificent soul track "Across 110th Street" which has been used in a number of movies including Tarantino's "Foxy Brown".

I think it was actually called "Jackie Brown". She was certainly pretty foxy though.

I always liked "Looking for a Love" by Bobby W. And his "Poet" albums tie in neatly with the mid-80s soul/disco revival thread elsewhere. Some great OTT duets with Patti LaBelle on those albums - 'Love Has Finally Come At Last', 'It Takes a Lot of Strength to Say Goodbye', etc.

Of course it was "Jackie Brown" Con, written by Elmore Leonard. A slip of the keys.

Sorry about this, Dayna, but the Pedants are taking over!

"Jackie Brown" was a movie based on Elmore Leonard's "Rum Punch". The heroine in the book was called Jackie Burke. She was re-named Jackie Brown, in the movie of the same name. Tarrantino is said to have re-named her Jackie Brown, after "Foxy Brown", an earlier blaxploitation film starring Pam Grier, who stars in "Jackie Brown".

Anyone still reading? Anyone still care?

The Womacks, at their best, were fabulous.

This is a great Womack & Womack song that could easily slip into the disco thread.

At this juncture we have to explain that Womack and Womack consisted of Cecil Womack (Bobby's brother) and his wife Linda Cooke Womack (Sam Cooke's daughter). The Womack brothers were Bobby, Cecil, Curtis, Friendly Jr. and Harris. Oh and Bobby married Sam Cooke's widow Barbara. Are you paying attention Dayna?

We should also mention that Bobby W married Sam Cooke's widow not long after Sam was murdered, so he was, at one point, the step-father of the woman who later became his brother's wife.

Excuse the jump Rob. Great minds and all. Your inference is neat.

I don't know that song by Bobby Womack Dayna. He did play guitar on Sly & The Family Stone's album called "There's a Riot Goin' On", but I can't find a song by him with that title.

Also a major influence on Jimi Hendrix, with whom he toured when the latter was just starting out. It's extremely possible that Womack gave young Jimi a guitar lesson or two.

Bobby Womack sits top of my wish list for living musicians I want to see in concert. He was booked to play the Forum in London about 3 years ago - knowing his reputation as - shall we say "unpredictable" - I delayed buying my ticket until the concert and checked on the net that afternoon to find the gig cancelled as Bobby had not gotten on his LA-London flight. A friend later told me he travelled to (I think) Birmingham around the same time to see Bobby perform at a soul music weekender and he was still magnificent - such a great singer and guitarist!

I've listened to and enjoyed his music across the decades and while his albums are always patchy he often knocks up a gem or two. Even his C&W album is entertaining. A decade or so ago an advertising company here licensed his lovely 70s recording of California Dreaming for a car ad' and it gave him his one and only UK hit single! Harry Hippie is not only a great song but features exquisite guitar playing. Womack & Womack also made some fine music in the 80s - i wonder what they are up to now? Bobby is a notorious party animal so in some ways sabotaged his own career. Anyone ever seen him in concert?
