Unlikely cover versions that are actually jolly good

Who recommends what, for the perfect record collection, including best guitar solos, African records and singers with gravelly voices

Hi taiyo. How are you doing? I was a huge fan of the early Mae West movies when I was young, just had to go look for clips of the songs you mentioned.

I found "Day Tripper"

and "Treat Him/Her Right"

(She would have been 70 in 1963)

Hi Judith,

Thanks for finding and posting those. Rather weird videos and a shame that Day Tripper cuts, but you get the gist. Did you have a look for 'Shakin' All Over'? Perhaps we shouldn't, for Gordon's sake.

I did, but luckily for Gordon, it was not to be found. No more health hazards for the dear man. Here's Vince Taylor's version of "Shakin All Over." I like it. Is this what happens when a person born in Middlesex attends Hollywood High?

I was going to do a best covers post, but thought I'd resurrect this one as at least two of my three are unlikely and all are jolly good!

The Gossip - 'Careless Whisper'

A brilliantly bruising, dancable take on the George Michael, ahem, 'classic'.

The Gourds - 'Gin and Juice'

Snoop Doggy Dogg, bluegrass stylee...

And slightly more obvious (and sadly unavailable on YouTube) is Ani DiFranco's version of Dylan's 'Hurricane'. Very different from the original, but just as good, it's set over an incredible bass groove and funky guitar.

And, seeing as the original has come up in the worst singers thread, my current favourite cover:

I've heard let Your Love Grow all my life. Recently, there's been a TV ad with a version which I found out is by Petra Haden. I almost haven't realized what a pretty song it is. Now the song is stuck in my head. I want to download it, but haven't been able to.
