And now I have it in today's post from Sterns, part of a multi-CD package of Mbilia's finest moments called Bel Canto, complete with attractive booklet. How can downloads compete with this kind of thing? They can't.

I don't know, Charlie, whether you bought the entire cd simply for this track - Never having downloaded tracks myself I find I've bought more than enough cds simply to obtain one track that I remember loving some years ago. This week I made a ghastly error. I got a Jackie Wilson double record -no less than 39 tracks - and through a dreadful lapse in concentration on my part .....no Lonely Teardrops, the only track I was desperate for.

That one from that guy on that album, the name of which will come to me in a second ...

... and it did. "Ak Manday," played by A. Dhzumabaev, from The Secret Museum of Mankind: Central Asia. That One By That Woman Earlier In The Same Album is fine too. (Tatyana Makharadze and "Karishalshi Antebulo:" I had to look it up.)

I've been thinking long and hard about this.
There is one song that somehow pops up every time:

Pensamientos by Juan Peña Lebrijano and Orchestra andalusi de Tanger

A combination of the flamenco song Pensamientos and the Oum Khalsoum standard Genna Li Shwey Shwey (other transcriptions exist).

It hits like a hammer and it has been a favourite for years.
