Songs About Food

Postby Jamie Renton » Fri Nov 11, 2011 2:11 pm

Next week I'm DJing the afterparty for the Feeding the 5000 charity event: http://www.feeding5k.org/ (I get paid in wonky carrot stew & hand-pressed apple juice)

I'd quite like to stir a few food-related songs into my set. Anyone got any suggestions? Have we done a thread on this before? I can't believe we haven't, but a quick search couldn't find any evidence that we have.

Thanks

Jamie

There's a mushroom on my eyelid
There's a carrot down my back
I can see in the distance
A vast quantity of beans
To you I'm just a flavour
To make your soup taste nice
Oh my god here come the onions
And, I don't believe it, at least a pound of rice

There was a time when bacon sandwiches
Were everyone's favourite snack
I'm delicious when I'm crunchy
Even when I'm almost black
So why you make a soup with me
I just can't understand
It seems so bloody tasteless
Not to mention underhand

Now there's no hope of getting out of here
I can feel I'm going soft
Dirty waters soak my fibres
The whole saucepan's getting hot
So I may as well resign myself
Make friends with a few peas
But I just, I can't help hoping
that a tummy ache will bring you to your knees

Bring you to your knees...

Slim Gaillard's "Dunkin' Beigels" for a start

And Louis Jordan liked singing about his grub:
"Beans and Corn Bread"
"Cole Slaw"
"You're My Meat"

'Memphis Soul Stew' - King Curtis
'Chicken Crazy' - Joe Tex

There must be lots of soul and New Orleans food related songs that I can't think of at the moment.

Bob had a Theme Time Radio Hour on the subject (Episode 29)

Olu Dara often mentions food in his cool funky New Orleans songs. 'Okra' off 'In the world'
for example
Has he released anything since Neighbourhoods?

I don't think that he has David, which is a great pity. I think he might have done something with his son, who is the rapper Nas (who has done some work with Damian Marley I think?). I'd love to hear another album from Olu Dara.

Nas & Damian Marley did an album together. The track 'Patience' was played heavily sampling Amadou & Mariam's 'Sabali'

Cornbread, Beans, and Black Mollasses.........Sonny Terry / Brownie McGee
Gimmie a Pigfoot and a bottle of Beer.............Bessie Smith
French Fries with Black Pepper...........Morphine
Cut The Cake............Average White Band
Bread and Butter............The Newbeats
then there's.....Peanut Butter, Salt Peanuts, Rubber Biscuit, Toast, all washed down with Strawberry Wine.

Finally, I shudder to mention this since I hate the blatant opportunism of the man and the ludicrous proliferation of cooking shows on the tv but a Rick Stein PR vehicle is currently being trailed by the BBC. Something like Rick Stein Meets the Blues. You can just imagine can't you?
