Best record with whistling on it

Postby Charlie » Wed Feb 18, 2009 11:20 am

Noting today's obituary of the otherwise obscure Sam Taylor, who whistled on 'Dock of the Bay', let's hear it for the great whistling records. Has Bob Dylan dealt with this in Theme Time Radio Hour? If so, I missed it.

The first record I clearly remember with whistling was 'Singing the Blues' by Guy Mitchell, although 'The Happy Whistler' May have been earlier. But recently, the practice has pretty much died out, although I suspect that CW Stoneking probably whistles, possibly even in the programme due to go out on World on 3 on Friday.

Prof Longhair: "Come To The Mardi Gras"

Bobby Charles: "Small Town Talk" (just the intro on the first bar - hear the whistle and you know the song instantly)

Beck: The one on 'Odelay' - i forget the title. Like the Bobby Charles one, once you hear it you know it. "Sissyneck"?

"Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" all together now!

There was a blues singer who in later career went under the moniker of Whistlin' Alex Moore all on the basis of one track recorded in 1960 see http://www.wirz.de/music/moorafrm.htm

Seeing Alan's name caused me to remember and expect him to mention the magical 'Travellin Mood' by James Wayne. Dr John covered the song on Gumbo but I don't recall if he also whistled on it.

Not being at home with my records I could hear it in my head and knew I had it on your 70s Sound Of The City compilation but for the life of me couldn't bring to mind the aritst.

Best record with whistling on it?

It won't be anything by Roger Whittaker then.

I immediately thought of Cheikh Lo and Sant Maam from his album ne la thiass, which has a bit of a gorgeous spaghetti western thing about it....did The Good The Bad and The Ugly have whistling on it?

'Harry Irene' by Captain Beefheart, on Shiny Beast/ Bat Chain Puller albums. About a lesbian couple who run a characterful restaurant and bohemian haunt : "They sold wine like turpentine to painters" (a deliberate double meaning ? ie they sold a lot of it, or that it tasted foul and artists bought it).
Anyway nice whistling at the end ! And the only Beefheart tune my girlfriend cares for.
On a slight tangent, it's on record that Beefheart often taught the Magic Band(s) his tunes and the individual instrument lines via whistling.

Dr. John again..............Big Chief....doesn't it? There's certainly a Professor Longhair version with whistling.
